He Comforted Their Child While I Recovered Alone Chapter 07

Grayson found the email where I’d booked my surgery overseas.

The destination on the ticket matched the city where the clinic was.

He booked a flight that same night.

Piper blocked the door, refusing to let him leave.

“You’re going after Addie? What happens to me and Beckett?”

“Mom and Dad already said, once she calms down, we’ll lay everything out in the open.”

“You said it yourself. Staying with her was only ever about duty.”

Grayson looked at her and suddenly asked, “And what about Addie?”

Piper didn’t follow. “What?”

“Every single one of us has had an agenda. You wanted to bring your son home. Mom and Dad wanted both

their daughters close. I wanted to keep my wife and my son at the same time.”

“Addie lost her baby, lost the use of her leg, and she didn’t even get the right to know the truth.”

“What happens to her?”

Piper’s eyes went red. “But you’re the one who came to see me overseas in the first place. You’re the one who

said Addie was too volatile, that she’d never survive knowing Beckett existed.”

“Now she’s the one who left. How is that all on me?”

Grayson didn’t argue back.

“It’s not all on you. Every lie came out of my own mouth. Every choice was mine to make.”

For the first time, he stopped shifting the blame onto anyone else.

Mom came rushing in, and the second she heard, she snapped at him.

“Piper had your baby for you. Turn on her now, and how’s she supposed to hold her head up after this?”

Grayson’s voice came out quiet.

“And when Addie lost our baby because of me, did any of you ever think about how she was supposed to

keep living?”

Mom opened her mouth, then shut it.

It took her a while to answer. “She had you looking after her.”

“And I didn’t look after her at all.”

The words landed, and the room went silent.

Before he left, Grayson signed the divorce papers.

His lawyer looked a little surprised.

He gripped the pen so tight his knuckles went white.

“I don’t want a divorce.”

“But she’s already lost too much because of me. I can’t use our marriage to trap her anymore.”

He didn’t ask for anything in return. He just signed over the townhouse and every dollar of shared property

from the last five years.

The lawyer sent it all back.

“Ms. Whitmore says there’s nothing in that house she wants. As for the money, she’ll get back what’s legally hers through the courts. Not a dollar more.”

Grayson stared at that line for a long moment.

There used to be a time I couldn’t even leave the house without leaning on his arm.

Now, I wouldn’t even take what he was offering.

Before his flight took off, he sent me one last message.

[Addie, I’m coming to find you.]

It never went through either.
