I held my stomach and slowly made my way to my room.

My wolf hugged me, trying to soothe the pain in my abdomen.

That night, no one called me for dinner.

I wasn’t hungry anyway. I packed my things.

When I came out to use the bathroom, the dirty dishes were still on the table.

They were waiting for me to clean up.

Maybe they even thought they were giving me a way to back down.

They thought I’d do what I always did-act like a servant to win them back.

But I didn’t need to.

At noon the next day, Mom, Dad, and Lily were getting ready to leave, all smiles.

When they saw me, the chatter stopped for a second.

Then Mom scoffed. “You walk around with that miserable face all day, like everyone owes you something.”

Lucas followed me to the bathroom. He looked at my reflection in the mirror.

“Are you really not going to apologize to Mom? How can you let her leave for her trip unhappy?”

“She seems happy enough.”

I shook the water off my hands, dried them, and walked out.

Lucas followed with a dark look, about to say something.

Mom cut him off. “Don’t waste your breath on her. She bites anyone who gets close.”

This time, Dad and Lucas stayed quiet. Usually they’d say something for me. But they’d rather not upset

Mom.

I left the house first.

When we met downstairs, Lily froze. “Where are you going?”

“Where else? Off to work,” Mom said, her tone dripping with disdain, pulling Lily into the car.

But then Dad froze. He noticed my suitcase.

If it was just work, the insurance office was close by-he’d arranged it himself. If I got hurt in the human. world, I could come right back.

So why the luggage?

Dad seemed to sense something. That natural bond of blood, sharp and painful.

He waved at me hurriedly, walking faster to catch up.

“Elara, where are you going?”

But a horn blared, loud and sharp.

His feet stopped. His face went pale.

My ride had already pulled away, leaving him in a cloud of exhaust.

Lucas leaned out of the car across the street. “Dad, what are you doing? Get in! I’m driving you to the airport.”

Dad looked toward me again, sighed, and got in the car.

The car went to the train station.

I fell asleep as soon as I boarded.

When I woke up, we’d arrived. The company driver was waiting by the exit, waving at me.

“Been waiting long?” I asked, embarrassed.

He shook his head and smiled. “Not at all.”

Honestly, humans were pretty kind.

Maybe I was still tense from the last few days. I fell asleep again in the car.

When I woke, I cursed my wolf. How could she be so careless with our safety?

The family group chat showed 99+ unread messages.

Mom and Dad were in Europe. Lily was blowing up the chat.

“French girls have such amazing skin! I’m hitting the makeup stores later.”

“Lucas, do you need toiletries? Or a razor?”

Lucas was still working at the Pack, so he couldn’t join them. But he replied almost instantly.

“I don’t need anything. Spend it on yourself.”

“Hehe, you’re the best, Lucas.”

It was getting dark. The driver glanced at me. “Oh, you’re awake. I was about to wake you. Your flight’s tomorrow at noon. You can get a good night’s sleep. You look tired.”

My eyes stung. Even a stranger could see how exhausted I was.

But my family never cared.

“Thanks.”
