I Was Trapped In An Elevator On My Birthday, But No One Cared Chapter 09

My mom’s face went ashen. My dad went rigid too.

“Mira, you can’t say that. What grudge is there between parents and kids? When you were little, we loved you

too.”

I nodded. “Maybe. But I can’t remember it.”

All I could remember was, after the Smiths moved in, my birthday became her birthday. My dresses became her dresses. My boyfriend sat beside her. My pain was just me being dramatic. My terror was me making a

huge deal out of nothing. And that slap.

My mom was crying. “I really regret it. After you walked out that night, I went into your room and found what was in your drawer. Those handmade cards you made me when you were little. I saw every single one of

them. I had no idea you kept all that.”

I said evenly, “They’re in the trash now.”

She covered her mouth and sobbed harder.

My dad’s eyes were red too. “Your mom hasn’t slept in days. And I regret it too. I never should’ve said that if you walked out, you shouldn’t bother coming home. I was just angry. Mira, please. Come home with us.”

I asked, “And where would I stay?”

They froze.

I pressed on. “In my room?”

My mom rushed to answer. “Of course! It’s always been your room. We moved all of Serena’s things out. We won’t let her stay there ever again.”

I let out a small smile. “See? The second I’m gone, her stuff finally gets cleared out. But when I was still living under that roof, not once did you remember it was supposed to be my room.”

That sentence left them with absolutely nothing to say.

Just then, my mom’s phone rang. She fumbled to silence it, but I’d already seen the caller ID: Serena Smith.

Embarrassment washed over my mom’s face.

I said, “Take it.”

She hesitated, then picked up.

Serena’s soft, gentle voice drifted out. “Mrs. Miller, did you see Mira? She still won’t come back?”

“Is she still blaming me? Please tell her I’m willing to let her have Julian, and I’ll even give up my birthday

from now on.”

My mom’s expression stiffened.

In the past, she would have instantly comforted Serena. But this time, she glanced at me and suddenly

lowered her voice. “Serena, don’t. Just stop.”

There was a clear pause on the other end. “Mrs. Miller?”

My mom shut her eyes. “This is our family’s business. From now on, stay out of it.”

Serena was quiet for a long moment. Then, softly, “I understand.”

After the call ended, my mom looked at me like she wanted to prove something. “See, Mira? Mommy really

will change.”
