Click, clack, click-

Jade, in her high heels, rushed in after him.

“Griffin, what happened? Why did you leave in such a hurry?”

Griffin looked up from his screen, his knuckles white as he clutched the phone.

“Kimberly’s gone…”

Jade paused, a flicker of triumph in her eyes before she masked it.

She moved closer, sitting beside him on the sofa.

“She just left? That’s so childish. You can’t just run away every time you get a little jealous.”

Griffin clutched his head.

“No. It’s not her fault.”

“It’s my fault. I’m the one who hurt her.”

He remembered every time he’d called her by the wrong name.

Every “accidental” gift sent to the wrong person, every cherished thing of hers he’d carelessly given away.

And despite it all, it was always Kimberly who compromised, who forgave.

He’d been too confident.

So confident that when a crack appeared in their relationship, he hadn’t bothered to fix it, just let everything precious leak away until nothing was left.

And now, Kimberly was gone.

If… if he could just make it up to her…

At that thought, Griffin shot to his feet.

“She must have gone back to Boston. I have to find her.”

Jade’s eyes widened.

“What?”

Griffin repeated himself, his voice firmer now.

“I’m going to find her. I’m going to-propose, and we’ll get married immediately.”

He pulled a ring from his pocket-the same one from the disastrous proposal.

It was resized and polished, and it gleamed under the light.

Griffin stared at it for a long moment before clenching it tightly in his palm.

He turned and strode toward the door.

Suddenly, Jade stepped in front of him, blocking his path with her arms outstretched.

“Then what about me?”

Griffin froze.

When he said nothing, Jade’s eyes slowly reddened, her voice cracking.

“Isn’t it for the best that she’s gone?”

“You still love me, and I still love you. Without her in the way, can’t we just be together again?”

Griffin was stunned into silence.

Jade tentatively reached for his hand.

The next second, he violently shook her off.

Jade’s face was a mask of astonishment.

But Griffin looked as if a switch had been flipped, his gaze clearing with a new, hard-won certainty.

“No. I’m sure now. I don’t love you anymore. The person I love is Kimbefly.”

He pushed the door open, giving Jade one last, final look.

“Everything I did for you… it was all about my own damn pride.”

“I see that now. Let’s end this. We shouldn’t see each other again.”
