He Opened the Door, I Walked Out Chapter 14

The Sterling Industries annual gala was in full swing when I arrived, fashionably late and feeling like I was walking into a minefield. The Grand Ballroom at the Plaza hummed with conversation, the clink of champagne glasses, and the soft jazz quartet playing in the corner. Crystal chandeliers cast everything in a warm, golden glow that should have been beautiful but instead felt oppressive

Richard’s hand pressed possessively against the small of my back as he guided me through the crowd. He’d been like this all evening- touching me constantly, making sure everyone could see his devoted husband act. The navy blue maternity dress he’d insisted I wear

was barely showing my condition yet, but he kept glancing down at my stomach like it was a trophy he’d won.

“There’s the man of the hour,” Richard murmured in my ear, his breath warm against my neck. “Julian Sterling himself. This is our

chance to really make an impression.”

I followed his gaze across the room to where Julian stood near the bar, surrounded by a small circle of executives and their wives. He looked magnificent in his black tuxedo, commanding attention without even trying. When his eyes met mine across the crowded room, I felt that familiar electric shock run through my body.

For a moment, time seemed to stop. Julian’s gaze dropped deliberately to my midsection, lingering there with an intensity that made my breath catch. He knew. Of course he knew. We’d barely spoken since that day at the hospital, but the weight of our shared secret hung between us like a live wire.

“Come on,” Richard said, practically dragging me toward Julian’s group. “I want to introduce you properly.”

I wanted to resist, to find some excuse to escape to the ladies’ room, but Richard’s grip on my arm was firm. As we approached, I could hear Julian’s deep voice cutting through the ambient noise, discussing quarterly projections with the kind of casual authority that made grown men hang on his every word.

“Mr. Sterling,” Richard called out, his voice pitched just a bit too loud, too eager. “I hope you don’t mind the interruption.”

Julian turned toward us, his expression perfectly composéd. “Richard, isn’t it? From the marketing division.” His eyes flicked to me briefly before returning to Richard’s face. “And this must be your wife,”

“Yes, sir. This is Elaine.” Richard’s chest puffed out with pride. “We’ve been married twenty years now.”

“How lovely,” Julian said, extending his hand to me. When our fingers touched, I felt a jolt of electricity that nearly made me gasp. His grip lingered just a moment too long, his thumb brushing against my knuckles in a gesture that looked innocent but sent heat racing up

my arm.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Sterling,” I managed, my voice steadier than I felt.

“The pleasure is entirely mine, Mrs. Mills.” His voice was velvet and steel, and the way he said my name made my stomach flutter

Richard, oblivious to the undercurrents crackling between Julian and me, beamed like a man who’d just won the lottery “Actually, sit, we have some exciting news to share. We’re expecting our first child.”

The words hit the air like a bomb. I felt the blood drain from my face as Julian’s eyes sharpened, focusing on Richard with laser intensity. Around us, the other executives murmured polite congratulations, but I could barely hear them over the roaring in my ears

“Is that so?” Julian’s voice was perfectly controlled, but I caught the dangerous edge underneath. His gaze flicked to my stomach again, and this time there was something predatory in his expression. “How… unexpected.”

Richard laughed, completely missing the threat in Julian’s tone. “Yes, well, sometimes life surprises you, doesn’t it? We’re about six

weeks along now Still early days, but we’re thrilled.”

Six weeks. The timeline hung in the air between Julian and me like a loaded gun. I watched Julian’s jaw tighten almost imperceptibly, saw the way his fingers gripped his champagne glass just a fraction too hard.

“Six weeks,” Julian repeated slowly, his eyes never leaving mine. “That is quite recent.

“The doctor says everything looks perfect,” Richard continued, his arm sliding around my waist in a gesture that felt more like a claim of ownership than affection. “We’re hoping for a boy, aren’t we, honey?”

I couldn’t speak. My throat felt like it was closing up, and the room suddenly seemed too hot, too crowded. Julian’s dark eyes were boring into mine, and I could see the barely controlled fury simmering beneath his composed exterior.

“Congratulations,” Julian said finally, raising his glass in what looked like a toast but felt like a challenge. “That’s truly… remarkable timing.”

The way he said it made Richard’s smile falter slightly. “Sir?”

Julian’s lips curved into something that might have been a smile if you didn’t look too closely. “Oh, nothing. It’s just fascinating how life works out sometimes. One day you think you know exactly where you stand, and the next…” He took a sip of his champagne, his eyes still locked on mine. “Everything changes.”

The tension was thick enough to cut with a knife. I could feel sweat beading at the base of my neck despite the air conditioning, and my hands were trembling so badly I had to clasp them together to hide it.

“Well,” Richard said, clearly sensing that something was off but not understanding what. “We should probably let you get back to your other guests, Mr. Sterling. Thank you for taking the time to speak with us.”

“Of course.” Julian’s voice was silk over steel. “And Richard? Congratulations again on your… blessed event. I’m sure it will be quite the adventure for all involved.”

As we walked away, I could feel Julian’s eyes following us across the room. Richard was practically glowing with pride, convinced that the conversation had gone well, that he’d somehow impressed the great Julian Sterling.

But I knew better. I’d seen the look in Julian’s eyes, heard the careful control in his voice. This wasn’t over. Not by a long shot

The real question was: what was Julian planning to do about it?
