He Saved A Dog But Let His Wife’s Father Die Chapter 11

“Camilla, can we talk?”

After everything, Lowed myself the closure only words could give. So I agreed.

We walked together to the viewing platform outside the mountain lodge.

Joseph spoke, his voice rough and low. “Camilla, I’m sorry.

A thin, weary smile touched my lips. “Sorry for which thing?”

He hesitated, caught off guard by my question.

After a long pause, he murmured. “I shouldn’t have grown so close to Ava and hurt you… I’m sorry.”

I watched him silently.

The mountain breeze brushed across the old scar above his brow. For a fleeting moment, I recalled the Joseph from years ago, slipping chocolate bars into my pocket before morning drills.

I spoke softly, my words carried away by the wind. “Do you know what the cruelest part of all this is?”

“The day my father died, I forced myself not to blame you, telling myself you had rules you were bound to uphold. Later, I understood the truth. You simply refused to make exceptions for me. Yet one single word from Ava was enough to send you rushing to her side, no matter the cost.”

Color drained from his face, his lips parting. “Your father’s death forced me to confront many hard truths… I acted to help her so no similar tragedy would unfold again.”

I shook my head, my voice steady, stripped of all emotion. “Whatever your reasoning, the fact remains: she mattered more to you. You brushed me aside time and again for her, turning your back on me over and over. Those are facts you cannot deny.”

Joseph shook his head violently, eyes reddening, his composure fracturing. “That can’t be true… How could she matter more than you?”

I cut him off. “I have no interest in listening to your empty words. I will not accept your apology. I will never

forgive you, and I will never come back. We ended a long time ago.”

He froze in place, motionless, as if all the air had been ripped from his lungs.

Just then, a lazy voice sounded behind us. “Camilla.”

Charlie Lewis leaned against the wooden pillar, hands tucked in his pockets, a faint smile playing on his lips,

his

gaze fixed solely on me. “We agreed to grab dinner. If we wait any longer, the base mess hall will stop

serving food.”

My lips curved in genuine warmth. “I’m coming.”

I turned to leave, but my wrist was seized.

Joseph’s voice sank low, barely restrained anger simmering beneath it. “Camilla, tell me honestly. How long ‘have you known this man? Is this why? Did you throw everything away just to be with him?”

I pulled my wrist free and shot a question back at him. “Do you think so little of me? You grow intimate with another servicewoman, and I’m supposed to cling to you desperately, even bear your child?”

Joseph fell speechless. His gaze locked onto Charlie, thick hostility boiling in his eyes. “Answer me first. How long have you known this man?”

I refused to get trapped in pointless self-defense. “This has nothing to do with you. We’re already divorced.”

“Divorced, divorced, divorced!” He raised his voice sharply, eyes glistening. “When did I ever say I wanted a

divorce?!”

I replied evenly. “You signed the paperwork yourself. Do you need me to remind you?”

He lost all control. “I never knew those were divorce papers! I never wanted this!”

“Whether you wanted it or not, the divorce is a fact.”

“Camilla!”

He reached for me again, but Charlie stepped sideways to block him before his fingers could touch my arm. “Can you stop harassing her? Can’t you see she wants nothing to do with you?”

Joseph’s expression darkened. “I’m speaking to my ex-wife. This doesn’t concern you.

Charlie let out a scoff. “Ex-husband. She’s your ex-wife, not your wife.”

The word ex landed like a physical blow.

Joseph’s eyes turned sharp. He grabbed Charlie by the collar, knuckles white. “We shared five years of marriage. Who the hell do you think you are?”

Charlie stayed unruffled even with his collar seized, tugging at the corner of his mouth. “Five years means

nothing. Maybe I won’t make the same mistake.”
