He Saved A Dog But Let His Wife’s Father Die Chapter 03

I said nothing.

Unfazed by my silence, she continued. “There was a major training accident at the firing range today, with dozens of injured service members. Joseph and I have been operating nonstop since this afternoon.”

“We just finished the last debridement, and we’re both starving. Then he suddenly remembered you love pan-seared cod here. He insisted we stop by, and said he’d grab a portion to take home for you.”

She turned toward Joseph, smiling sweetly. “Joseph always puts you first. I’m honestly so envious. I wish someone cared for me like that.”

If he truly loved me, would he forget our wedding anniversary?

If he truly loved me, would he share a late dinner with another woman deep into the night?

If he truly loved me, would he drive thousands of miles to operate on a dog, yet refuse to fight for my father’s last chance at survival?

I lifted my eyes to meet Ava’s, my voice flat and cold. “Whether he loves me or not is hardly your concern.”

Ava’s smile faded bit by bit, and her eyes reddened instantly. “I’m so sorry… Did I say something wrong? I only meant well…”

Her voice trembled, and tears welled up in her eyes.

Joseph stepped forward on instinct, positioning himself between Ava and me, shielding her from my view. “Camilla, you know she meant no harm. Why speak to her like that?”

His voice sank low. Whispers rippled from the surrounding diners.

“Medical staff work such brutal hours.”

“He thought to bring his wife food after surgery; he’s doing everything he can.”

“Some military wives are just too controlling.”

One remark after another. Everyone sided with them, as if I were the villain here.

A crushing weariness settled over me.

They appeared so blameless and righteous, leaving me no room to explain myself. I had no desire to argue further.

I grabbed my bag and turned to leave. As I walked past Joseph, he clamped a tight grip around my wrist.

The pressure made me wince. “Let go.”

Joseph’s face darkened. “Apologize to Ava first.”
