He Saved A Dog But Let His Wife’s Father Die Chapter 02

“Joseph.”

He paused and glanced over his shoulder. “What is it?”

I held his gaze, my voice quiet. “Do you know what today is?”

He replied reflexively, “Friday?”

He truly had forgotten. It was our fifth wedding anniversary.

Thankfully, it would also be our last.

“Nothing.” I looked away. “Go handle your business.”

Joseph studied me, as if sensing something was wrong.

After a short silence, he said stiffly. “I’ll be home once I’m done. Want me to pick up some late-night snacks for you?”

I shook my head. “No.”

I would never need him to bring anything for me again.

Once Joseph left, I headed to a nearby restaurant for dinner.

While waiting in line, I dialed an auto dealership.

“I’d like to purchase an off-road SUV capable of handling the entire Beartooth Highway. My budget is eighty thousand, and it must be equipped with satellite communication.”

The sales manager said they had one model in stock, though it needed to be transported from the warehouse—a one-week wait.

Seven days—enough time to let go of the past and untangle myself from this broken marriage.

“I’ll take it. I’ll come pick it up in seven days.”

I’d barely ended the call when a serviceman at the restaurant entrance called out. “Dr. York, your private dining room is ready. This way, sir.”

I instinctively lifted my eyes.

Sure enough, it was Joseph, with Ava walking beside him. They stepped inside together, shoulders brushing.

Joseph had shed his coat, wearing a black tactical button-up with sleeves rolled to his forearms, exhaustion etched across his features.

Ava leaned toward him, chatting as they walked. Whatever drew a faint smile from his lips.

I stood frozen, a sharp stabbing pain twisting my chest.

There was a time when he came home from work and I would eagerly share every detail of my day, desperate for his attention. But he’d always seemed indifferent, rarely bothering to respond, let alone smile.

I’d comforted myself, telling myself endless rounds of clinic work drained all his energy.

Now I knew the truth. He still had smiles left to give.

Just not for me.

“Camilla?” Ava spotted me first.

She hurried over, her face composed into a picture-perfect smile. “What are you doing here all alone?”
