My Love Inappropriate. Her Scandal Take the Blame. Get Lost, Uncle! I Married the Mad Alpha! Chapter 07

On the first day, only a cup of water and half a cold sandwich were pushed beneath the door.

On the second day, they sent another cup of water and food that had already turned sour.

By the third day, my fever was so high that I could barely think, yet I could still hear the staff talking in the hallway.

“Mr. Carter is putting so much effort into Ms. Bennett’s engagement gala. He’s personally approving every detail.”

“The pink diamond ring was custom-made, and the ballroom will be filled with her favorite white roses.”

“The Carter family has never held such an elaborate ceremony.”

“That’s because this time, he’s truly in love with his future mate.”

I lay on the carpet, drifting in and out of consciousness as memories of the eighteenth birthday party Adrian had arranged for me surfaced through the fever.

I remembered the rushed schedule, the ordinary decorations, the guests whispering under their breath, and Adrian’s distant, restrained expression throughout the evening.

So this was what he looked like when he truly loved someone.

Everything I had once fought so desperately to win had existed only in my own imagination. I had mistaken his care for something it was never meant to be.

Three days later, the door finally opened.

The sunlight was so harsh that I could not keep my eyes open.

An assistant stood in the doorway and delivered Adrian’s order in a flat, formal voice.

“Mr. Carter instructed me to take you to the Boston branch office. We’re leaving now.”

I braced myself against the wall and forced myself upright.

“Can I shower first?”

The assistant saw the blood that had seeped through the back of my clothes and visibly froze, but he did not dare ask a question.

I quickly cleaned the wounds and changed into fresh clothes.

The woman in the mirror was pale and exhausted, but her eyes were eerily calm.

I went downstairs carrying only my identification and the signed marriage documents.

The assistant could not help asking, “Aren’t you going to pack anything?”

“No. I can buy whatever I need after I arrive. And you don’t have to drive me. I’ve already called a car.”

Before getting in, I turned back to him.

“Tell Adrian I hope his engagement gala goes smoothly. I’ll obey his request and keep my distance from him from now on.”

The car door closed, and the black sedan slowly pulled away from the Carter estate on Long Island.

Only after we were beyond the Carter estate’s security cameras did the driver speak.

“Irene, the Moretti family sent me to collect you. We’re going to the airport. You’ll attend the wedding as soon as the plane lands.”

I leaned against the window and watched the familiar streets retreat behind me.

The city where I had spent twenty years of my life was disappearing into the distance, along with the man I had loved throughout my entire youth.

“All right,” I whispered.

From that moment on, I would never look back.

The plane took off at dusk.

I watched the city shrink beneath me until it was nothing but a scattering of lights.

The seat beside me was empty. The Moretti family had sent a private jet, and I was the only passenger.

I pulled out the marriage documents and read them again.

The name on the other side was Dante Moretti. I had never met him. I had no idea what he looked like, what kind of man he was, or whether he would be kind or cruel.

But I knew one thing.

He was not Adrian.

And that was enough.

I tucked the documents away and closed my eyes.

The flight would take eight hours. When I woke, I would be in Italy. A new country. A new name. A new life.

I thought about the engagement gala Adrian was planning for Sofia. The pink diamond ring. The white roses. The elaborate ceremony.

And I thought about my eighteenth birthday party, where he had barely looked at me.

I had spent years trying to earn his love. I had shrunk myself, changed myself, made myself small so he would have room to notice me.

But I was done with that now.

When the plane touched down in Milan, I opened my eyes.

A man in a black suit was waiting for me at the arrivals gate. He held a sign with my name.

“Ms. Carter? Welcome to Italy. The Moretti family is expecting you.”

I took a deep breath, stepped forward, and walked into my new life.
