He Said He Loved Me, Then Gave Her Our Marriage Certificate Chapter 10

Hayes smiled.

“Compared with the woman I love, the Whitlock family’s pride means very little.”

“You announced that the wedding cost $3 million. My finance office transferred $4.5 million to Whitmore

Group.

“Consider the extra compensation for your trouble.’

“Thank you for helping me marry my wife.”

“Stay for dinner. Have another drink on us.”

Grant’s face turned livid. He could not force out a single word.

Serena approached him.

“Stop fighting, Grant. Let’s go.”

When he did not respond, she raised her voice.

“Don’t you understand? You and I belong together.”

She held out her phone. “The doctor sent my results.

“I’m pregnant. You’re going to be a father.”

Something in Grant broke. He shoved her to the floor and kicked her abdomen repeatedly.

Blood spread beneath Serena as she moaned in pain and begged him to call for help.

Grant looked down at her without warmth.

“You destroyed my life, and now you think a baby will tie me to you forever? Keep dreaming.”

By the time the ambulance arrived, Serena was unconscious.

The life-threatening hemorrhage forced the surgeons to perform an emergency hysterectomy.

On the day she was discharged, Sterling Bay detectives met her outside the hospital.

“Serena Whitmore, we have a warrant for your arrest on charges of criminal solicitation and conspiracy to

commit sexual assault.’

The recovered records and her public confession made the case impossible to deny. Under a plea agreement, she received a two-year prison sentence.

Serena refused to go down alone. She pressed charges against Grant for the attack that had ended her pregnancy and permanently injured her.

Grant was convicted of aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury and sent to prison as well.

Hayes and I learned the final outcome while traveling to Maui for our honeymoon.

At our oceanfront resort, I stood before him and slowly slipped the strap of my dress from my shoulder.

His voice turned rough. “Are you sure?”

I nodded.

Later that night, I finally told Hayes the truth: Grant and I had never slept together.

His eyes filled with tears.

“Talia, he never touched you?”

I smiled, calm and utterly free of regret.

“No. He chose someone who matched him.”

Hayes lifted me off my feet and spun me around, laughing through his tears.

With the ocean rolling beyond our windows, he bent and kissed me again.
