Before I could say anything, Mira suddenly clutched her stomach and cried out.

“Ethan…”

“My stomach hurts.”

She looked up at him with frightened eyes.

“Vivian pushed me just now.”

“What if something happened to the baby?”

Baby?

Her mother immediately started wailing.

“Get her to the hospital!”

“If anything happens to Mira’s baby, I’ll make Vivian pay!”

Joy flashed across Ethan’s face.

Then panic swallowed it.

He lifted Mira into his arms and rushed out without looking back.

Not once.

He didn’t see how pale I was.

He didn’t see the blood spreading beneath my dress.

He didn’t know.

I was pregnant too.

A tearing pain ripped through my lower stomach.

I held Snowball tighter as darkness crowded my vision.

Then my body gave out.

Before I lost consciousness, I heard the housekeeper scream through her tears.

“Ms. Hale!”

“The security cameras caught everything!”

When I opened my eyes again, all I saw was white.

White walls.

White sheets.

Harsh hospital lights.

The smell of disinfectant burned my throat.

A dull ache pulsed through my abdomen.

I reached for my stomach without thinking.

The second my palm touched it, dread settled over me.

The hospital door slammed open.

Ethan stood in the doorway.

His suit was wrinkled.

His face was tight with barely controlled anger.

He crossed the room in a few quick steps.

“Vivian Hale, when the hell are you going to stop?”

I stared at him.

My throat was too dry to answer.

He clearly wasn’t waiting for one.

“Mira was already scared.”

“Then you had the housekeeper start talking about security footage and turned the whole thing into a bigger mess.”

“She’s still in the OB wing.”

“She’s crying so hard she can barely speak.”

“Are you happy now?”

I looked at him quietly.

I had been rushed to the hospital bleeding.

And somehow, I was still the villain.

“So you came here to fight her battle for her?”

His frown deepened.

“What else would I be here for?”

“Whatever you think of Mira’s mother, she’s still older than you.”

“You put your hands around her throat.”

“What kind of behavior is that?”

“And Snowball?”

“No one has even confirmed what happened.”

“What gives you the right to keep blaming Mira and her mother?”

I stared at him.

It felt like someone had carved a hollow space straight through my chest.

“No one confirmed it?”

I repeated the words softly.

“The housekeeper said the security cameras caught everything.”

Ethan’s expression stiffened.

Then it hardened again.

“I watched the footage.”

My breath caught.

I looked up at him.

He avoided my eyes.

His voice turned clipped.

“The footage is incomplete.”

“It only shows Mira’s mother walking into the kitchen.”

“Nothing after that.”

“You can’t condemn someone based on that.”

My fingers slowly tightened around the bedsheet.

Incomplete?

Was it really incomplete?

Or had someone made sure I would never see the rest?

Before I could ask, Ethan tugged impatiently at his tie.

“This ends here.”

“Mira was badly shaken.”

“Her mother has bruises around her neck.”

“When you’re discharged, you’ll apologize to both of them in person.”

For a second, I thought I had misheard him.

“What did you say?”

“I said you’ll apologize.”

He stared at me.

His tone left no room for argument.

“Vivian, don’t make me say something we’ll both regret.”

“You lost control first.”

“Mira could have blamed you for putting her pregnancy at risk.”

“She didn’t.”

“What more do you want?”

A laugh slipped out of me.

Then the tears came.

Snowball was dead.

My baby was gone.

And the man standing in front of me only cared that another woman had been frightened.

He only cared whether another woman’s baby was safe.

And he wanted ME to apologize.

Ethan watched my tears fall.

For one second, his expression shifted.

His voice softened slightly.

“Vivian, stop making this harder than it needs to be.”

“Just swallow your pride.”

“Apologize.”

“Then we can move past this.”

I slowly raised my eyes to his.

My voice was so quiet it was almost nothing.

“I lost our baby.”

Ethan froze.

The room went dead silent.

Several seconds passed before he frowned.

“What did you say?”
