He Gave His Secretary Two Hours Every Day Until Our Wedding. So I Left Chapter 08

In the dim bar, empty bottles littered the floor.

Owen couldn’t bear it. He snatched the near-empty glass from Nathaniel’s hand.

“This is my fault. If I hadn’t let slip about that post, Elena wouldn’t have given up so fast. I’ll help you win her

back.”

Nathaniel bowed his head, thinking of the post he’d crafted solely for Elena, and felt a savage urge to strike

himself.

Another foolish choice. Another injury dealt.

A friend attempted to smooth things over.

“Owen, you’re too honest. You’re only worsening things for Nathaniel.”

“But truly, Nathaniel, you’ve indulged Lydia far too much. Once at the springs, I saw her belittle Elena myself.”

Nathaniel’s head snapped up. The drunken haze cleared.

“What did you say? Repeat it.”

His sharp gaze startled the friend, who recounted what he’d witnessed.

That day at the hot springs entrance, Lydia-her face concealed-had emerged.

Elena’s friends urged her to stay before the storm broke, but Elena seemed reluctant.

Lydia approached her and spoke only to Elena. “If you cannot afford a room, my boyfriend can comp you one. He’s a principal shareholder here. It requires only a word.”

Elena was ever gracious.

She assumed Lydia meant to help and thanked her warmly.

But Nathaniel caught the edge beneath Lydia’s tone.

“Sending you driving back in a storm-they clearly care little for you. Frankly, if he’s your boyfriend, you ought to leave him.”

Nathaniel listened in silence. He didn’t reach for another drink.

He rose and walked from the private room.

Lydia called him that evening.

Nathaniel hadn’t intended to answer, but drunkenness made him mispress.

“Nathaniel, you didn’t come for yesterday’s two hours. Nor today’s. That’s four hours total.”

“What is wrong? Are you retracting your promise?”

Promise. Nathaniel laughed, hollow and bitter.

For her, he’d broken countless promises to Elena. Yet this once, and Lydia couldn’t tolerate it?

He drank deeply, then spoke with no warmth left.

“Lydia, this ends here.”

“Your suite at the resort remains yours. The therapist will continue your treatment. But beyond that… do not

seek me again.”
