He Gave His Secretary Two Hours Every Day Until Our Wedding. So I Left Chapter 07

In that moment, Nathaniel finally grasped it.

Perhaps Elena’s cancellation wasn’t a jest. Wasn’t a tantrum.

Perhaps it wasn’t only her parents’ decision.

Elena truly didn’t want him anymore?

The thought consumed him, impossible to dislodge.

He rushed from the room without changing his shoes.

Lydia opened her door as well. Saw him run. Called after him.

But Nathaniel seemed not to hear.

All he knew was this.

He could not lose Elena. Could not lose the one person whose single glance could lift his spirits and wash away his exhaustion.

At home, nothing had changed.

Elena’s slippers still sat by the door. Her dresses still hung in the closet.

Nathaniel exhaled, a small, shaky breath.

He knew it. Elena couldn’t discard him so easily.

After all, she had pursued him first.

Owen had said, “Elena just returned from abroad. Saw you and was smitten. What do you say? Give her a

chance?”

Nathaniel had noticed her, of course.

That night, amid the crowd, Elena had been luminous. Every eye strayed to her.

Nathaniel narrowed his gaze, lifted his glass, and caught her glancing his way.

A strange tingling touched his tongue. A sensation he’d never known.

Nathaniel said lazily, “Sure. Let’s try.”

Owen blinked. “Wait-truly? Elena! Come here!”

But Elena was gone.

Nathaniel went to her parents’ home. They weren’t there either.

Only the butler remained.

“The Whittemores are traveling. No set return date.”

“Miss Whittemore said if you came, to return these to you.”

The butler brought out a large box from storage. It was filled with fine jewelry and designer bags.

Nathaniel crouched. He sifted through three identical bags-same style, same color, same brand. Two

identical necklaces.

His eyes reddened at once.

He recognized them. All gifts he’d given Elena for holidays.

He’d tasked his assistant with selecting them.

He hadn’t known why his meticulous assistant had purchased duplicates.

Hadn’t known why Elena never mentioned it.

The butler showed him out.

He had hurt Elena. He had no right to remain in the Whittemore home.

No right to be angry with anyone.

Nathaniel stood outside and called his assistant.

When the car arrived, Nathaniel didn’t move.

He looked at his assistant, not with fury, but with confusion.

“Leo, how long have you worked for me?”

Assistant Leo Tanner glanced at the box, his voice unsteady. “S-seven years.”

Nathaniel was silent.

The assistant couldn’t bear it. He sank to his knees.

“Sir, it was Lydia. She ordered it.”

Without prompting, he confessed everything.

“Lydia chose every gift for Miss Whittemore. She said she remembered all your kindness and wished to

repay you.”

Nathaniel had already guessed.

Who else could command his longtime assistant so easily?

Who else would dare alter his instructions?

In that moment, Nathaniel understood. He had spoiled Lydia beyond measure.

Nathaniel drove away alone, leaving Leo kneeling in the dust.

Leo knew his employment was finished.
