The call ended on Ryan again.

A deep sense of helplessness settled over him, dimming the light in his eyes.

One look at his expression told Richard and Grace something was wrong. Their voices grew more anxious.

“What did Sophie say?”

Ryan still hadn’t told his parents that Sophie had cut him out of her life completely.

He couldn’t bring himself to repeat her final, cutting words, so he answered vaguely.

“She doesn’t want Thomas and Helen to know what happened. That’s why she doesn’t want to meet. She

wants us to go home.”

Richard and Grace’s hearts sank.

When they first learned the truth, they had hoped everything could be brought into the open. If the two younger people could forgive the past and find their way back to each other, joining the Whitfield and Blackwood families would have been ideal.

But before anything else, they had to respect what Ryan and Sophie wanted.

And judging by Sophie’s attitude, reconciliation seemed almost impossible.

They sighed together and frowned.

“If Sophie doesn’t want to see us, then let it go. But you’re the one who wronged her, so an apology is still necessary. We can’t allow what you did to destroy decades of friendship between our families.”

Ryan couldn’t answer. His chest felt unbearably heavy.

The three of them booked another flight, this time to Barcelona.

After landing, Richard called Thomas and explained the situation.

That evening, the two families met at a restaurant by the sea.

After a month apart, Sophie looked a little thinner, but her complexion was healthy and her eyes were bright.

For the first half hour, she sat in the corner and said nothing beyond an initial greeting.

Their parents carried most of the conversation.

When Thomas and Helen heard the engagement had ended, they were shocked and asked what happened.

Richard, Grace, and Ryan had no idea how to answer, so they gave only a vague explanation.

“Something happened at the last minute. Isabelle decided she didn’t want to go through with the wedding, so

they ended it.”

Seeing their discomfort, Helen didn’t press. She changed the subject instead.

“If it’s over, it’s over. Feelings can’t be forced.”

Thomas nodded. “Exactly. Since you don’t have wedding plans keeping you busy anymore, why not stay in

Spain for a while? We can show you around. It might help clear your heads.”

At that, Sophie finally spoke.

“Dad, Mom, didn’t you promise Aunt Claire you’d visit her in a few days?”

Her meaning was obvious.

Embarrassment crossed Richard and Grace’s faces.

A hint of panic appeared in Ryan’s eyes. He immediately waved the concern away.

“It’s fine, Thomas, Helen. You can take care of your plans. I’ll look after my parents, and we can all get

together again after you return.”

In other words, he intended to stay in Spain.

Annoyance rose inside Sophie. She looked at him with open impatience.

“Is that really necessary?”

The entire private room fell silent.

Thomas and Helen didn’t understand why their daughter was being so sharp. They apologized while scolding

her.

“We’re sorry. Sophie didn’t mean it that way. She’s only worried you won’t enjoy yourselves if we’re away.

Please don’t misunderstand.”

“Sophie, apologize to Richard and Grace. They came all this way. We’ll stay and show them around properly.

Your aunt can wait until next month.”

If the Blackwoods had come purely for a vacation, Sophie would have had no objection.

But she knew perfectly well that sightseeing wasn’t the real reason they were there.

As far as she was concerned, what happened between her and Ryan was private. It shouldn’t become a

conflict between two families.

She had also tried to keep her parents from learning about the humiliating mess, which was why she had

worked so hard to prevent this meeting.

Now the Blackwoods had come to her door and refused to let the matter end.

Months of hurt and anger surged back through her.

She no longer cared about preserving appearances.

“Dad, Mom, I’m not the one who came here to apologize, and I’m not the one who owes anyone an apology.”
