After I Finally Became His Perfect Donna Chapter 13

After I Finally Became His Perfect Donna Chapter 13

Over the next few days, Dorian stationed himself across the street from the seafood stall. Every single day.

He sat on the curb in silence, watching me work.

He tried to buy all myfried rice. I dumped the entire skillet into the trash. He tried to press money into my parents’ hands. My father chased him out of the alley with a broom.

Then Friday afternoon came. Business was booming at the stall.

I accidentally burned the back of my hand. A big, angry red welt.

Julian saw it and his brow furrowed tight. Without a word, he took my hand and pulled me into the back

room.

“How are you this careless?” He ran cool water over the burn, his eyes full of concern. “Keep it under cold

water first. I broughtointment.”

He bent his head, carefully applying the salve.

That was when the door was kicked open.

Dorian stormed in radiating violence, his eyes locked on Julian’s hand holding mine.

His fist connected with Julian’s face. “Get your hands off her!”

Julian staggered back from the blow, caught off guard.

But Dorian wasn’t done. He grabbed Julian by the collar. “Who gave you permission to touch her? She’s my Donna! Who the hell do you think you are?”

Julian wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth and shoved him off. “She doesn’t belong to anyone. She belongs to herself.”

“Sir, show some respect.”

The two men grappled at the edge of the road, crushing the tube of ointment Julian had brought for me.

I watched Julian bleeding because he’d tried to protect me. I watched Dorian acting like he had every right.

And suddenly, the instructor’s voice echoed in my head.

“Mrs. Voss, a perfect wife learns to read her husband’s moods. If your husband is unhappy, it is always your

fault.”

My fault? No.

I looked left, looked right, and grabbed the wooden stick leaning against the wall.

I swung it with everything I had and brought it down on the back of Dorian’s skull.

Dorian’s body went rigid. Blood ran down through his hair.

He turned around, staring at me in disbelief, hurt bleeding through his expression. “Lyra, you you hit me for

him?”

My hands were shaking around the stick. But I didn’t let go.

I stared straight into his eyes and spoke one word at a time. “Dorian, stop coming after me.”

“The Lyra who would eat food she was allergic to just to make you happy died in that river.”

“My name is Milo now. If I see you again, I’m calling the police.”

Dorian swayed on his feet.

He looked at the revulsion in my eyes, opened his mouth, and no sound came out.

Finally, he pressed his hand to the wound and stumbled out of the room.

I dropped the stick and sank to the ground, gulping air in huge, ragged breaths.

Julian walked over and placed his hand gently on my shoulder, brushing the loose hair from my face.

He let out a quiet laugh. “Milo, you’re incredible.”

I looked up and met his eyes, full of warmth and something like pride.

I finally cried. Laughing and crying at the same time. “Yeah I really am incredible…”

Milo, you came back to life. You’re incredible.

On the other side of things.

Dorian’s wound got infected. He collapsed on the street and was rushed to a local hospital.

The Vane family pulled every string they had to suppress the scandal he’d caused in town.

They also dispatched his cousin Luca to drag him back to Manhattan by force.

“Come on, man. Let it go.”

Luca looked at Dorian lying in the hospital bed and let out a long sigh.

“Uncle Victor is furious that you abandoned family business and chased her here. And now a hospital stay

for a street fight on top of it.”

“The council is getting restless. Uncle says if you don’t come back soon, he’s giving your seat to someone

else.”

Dorian acted like he hadn’t heard a word. “I need to go find Lyra…”

His voice was raw. He ripped out the IV line. “She’s just angry. She’s still mad that I didn’t believe her back

then.”

Luca blocked the doorway, his face pained. “Give it up. She’s not coming back.”

“She only hates me because of Mireille!”

Dorian’s head snapped up, his eyes bloodshot.

“Mireille lied to me. She told me it was just a place that taught manners. If I make Mireille pay back everything she owes Lyra, she’ll forgive me!”

“She’s always been soft-hearted. You know that, don’t you remember?”

His words came faster and faster. “Bring Mireille to me. Drag her if you have to. Get her in front of Lyra!”

Luca looked at Dorian, a chill running down his spine. In the end, he could only grit his teeth and agree.
