The Succubus Wife Discovered Her Perfect Husband Wasn’t Human Either Chapter 09

What happened next.

My mom ended up telling my dad anyway.

He called that same day.

First words out of his mouth: “Kid, did that incubus punk trick you? Need me to come pluck his wings?”

“Dad, he doesn’t have wings.”

“Then I’ll pull his tail off.”

“Dad!”

“Hmph.” He grunted. “Bring him over sometime. Let me get a look at him.”

“Fine.”

I hung up and looked at Lucian.

He was on his phone.

Face blank, but the little arrowhead tip of his tail was twitching.

He’d heard everything.

“You scared?” I asked.

“No.” He shut off his screen. “But if your father actually tries to pull my tail off, I might need some mental preparation.”

“He won’t. He’s all talk.”

Probably.

Hopefully.

My dad was an old succubus with a short fuse.

A few days later.

Something “happened” on Lucian’s side too.

His adoptive mother, Paige—that elegant, sweet-faced woman—suddenly asked me out for afternoon tea.

I thought it was just a normal mother-in-law bonding thing.

But once we sat down, Paige looked at me with a warm smile and razor-sharp eyes.

“Tessa, can I ask you something?”

“Of course.”

“When Lucian was little, he had a few small black spots on his back. He said they were birthmarks. But I haven’t seen them in years. He’s been hiding them, hasn’t he?”

My hand froze on my cup.

Paige kept smiling. “And when he got angry as a kid, his eyes would change color. I always thought it was just the lighting.”

“Also, those four claw marks on your living room wall. You patched them up with spackle, but they’re still visible.”

Sweat started beading on my back.

Paige took a sip of her coffee.

“When did he tell you?”

I gave up.

“A while ago.”

Paige nodded, her expression as casual as if she were commenting on the weather.

“I’ve known since he was five. That was the night he shifted in his sleep and scared the cat half to death.”

“…Then why did you never—”

“He didn’t want to talk about it, so I didn’t ask.” She looked at me. “He’s always been proud. He thought being different was something to be ashamed of. I’m his mother. As long as he’s healthy and happy, I don’t care if he has a tail.”

I looked at this woman.

And suddenly I understood—

The reason Lucian had grown up without resentment, without hating humans, was probably because of her.

“But Tessa.” Paige’s tone shifted. “You’re not exactly ordinary either, are you?”

I nearly choked on my tea.

“At the family dinner, I saw your fangs sharpen for a split second.” She

said it with a smile. “I’m not sure what your species is, but you’re definitely not human.”

Me: “…”

This family.

Not one of them was easy to fool.

I hesitated for three seconds.

Then decided to come clean.

“Paige, I’m a succubus.”

Paige let out a soft “Oh.”

Not surprised at all.

“No wonder you looked so pale before. Were you starving?”

“…Yeah.”

“And now you’re full?”

“…Yeah.”

“Good.” She patted my hand. “You two will be fine. From now on, when you come over, you don’t have to pretend anymore. It’s exhausting.”

I looked at her sincere smile.

And felt my nose prickle.

I’d really married into a good family.

When I got home, I told Lucian everything.

He was quiet for a long time.

So long I thought he’d short-circuited.

Then he said: “…She always knew?”

“Yeah. Since you were five.”

He didn’t say anything.

Just looked down.

His tail slipped out from behind him and curled gently around my fingers.

Light pressure.

But held tight.

I didn’t ask more.

I just wrapped my hand around his tail tip.

Pink and deep purple intertwined.

Like two souls who’d finally stopped being alone.

And found each other.

Later, Dara asked me: “How are things with your husband? Still in a cold war?”

I thought about it.

“Not cold anymore. Hot.”

“What do you mean?”

“Exactly what I said.”

“?”

I smiled and didn’t explain further.

Some things weren’t meant for human ears.

Like the fact that my husband had a deep purple tail.

Longer than mine.

Thicker too.

And at night, it wasn’t exactly well-behaved.

Better to keep that to myself.

Oh, and one more thing.

Zachary told me something later.

He said that in the first month of our marriage, Lucian had asked him point-blank at the office one day: “What do human women usually like?”

Zachary said: “You could give her flowers. Or cook her a meal.”

Lucian thought for a moment. “Would she think something’s wrong with me?”

Zachary: “Wrong with you how?”

Lucian didn’t answer. But he stayed at the office until two in the

morning that night.

Zachary said he watched his boss stand in front of the office mirror before leaving—tucking his tail in, letting it out, tucking it in again, over and over. Practiced for a full twenty minutes.

“He was practicing being human,” Zachary said, deadpan. “Every single day. For thirty years.”

I was quiet for a long time after hearing that.

Then I went home.

Opened the door.

Lucian was on the couch, watching TV.

His tail swayed lazily in the air.

When he saw me, his slit pupils lit up slightly.

“You’re back.”

“Mm.”

I walked over.

Sat down next to him.

Stuck out my pink tail and wrapped it around his on purpose.

He paused.

Turned to look at me.

“What’s wrong?”

“Nothing.” I rested my head on his shoulder. “I just wanted to tell you—”

“Yeah?”

“From now on, you don’t have to practice in front of me.”

He was quiet for a few seconds.

Then his tail tightened slightly.

Pulled me a little closer.

“Okay.”

The TV was still playing.

Sunset light streamed through the window, casting warm colors over the two tails wrapped together.

One pink.

One deep purple.

The days ahead.

Probably like this.

Two non-humans who’d pretended for too long.

Finally done pretending.

It was good.

Really, really good.
