The ambulance arrived quickly. Paramedics lifted me onto a stretcher and rushed me to the ER.

When I woke again, I was in a hospital room.

The nurse leaned over as soon as she saw my eyes open.

“Don’t move. You have a cracked rib and a mild concussion.”

I didn’t have the strength to speak, so I only nodded.

The door opened.

Relief flashed across Nathaniel’s face when he saw I was awake.

His eyes were bloodshot, but his voice was still cold.

“Lena, you almost ruined your entire life for that man.”

I looked at him and instinctively waited for his thoughts.

There was nothing.

The only sound in the room was the steady beeping of the heart monitor.

I stared for several seconds, then slowly exhaled.

Finally, it was quiet.

Nathaniel’s face turned deathly pale.

His voice trembled.

“What do you mean, finally quiet?”

I reached for the phone beside my bed and called Julian Shaw.

“Mr. Shaw, this is Lena.”

Every word sent a stab of pain through my chest.

“I didn’t withdraw from the position, but I failed to arrive on time.”

“Do I still have a chance?”

Julian’s voice was calm and steady.

“I reviewed yesterday’s candidates. None of them had a resume as strong as yours.”

“I’ll give you one last chance. Bring your resume to Ashford headquarters and interview for the position.”

“Whether you stay will depend on your performance.”

I tightened my grip on the phone.

“Okay.”

After the call ended, I closed my eyes.

I had already lost my home.

I couldn’t lose this job too.

Nathaniel stood beside the bed, finally coming back to himself.

His eyes reddened as he stared at me.

“Lena, this isn’t you throwing a tantrum, is it? You really don’t want our

Someone knocked on the door.

Penny stood outside holding a food container.

“Lena, you’re awake. I brought you something to eat.”

Before she could step inside, I pressed the call button beside my bed.

The nurse came in moments later.

“I need to rest.”

The nurse turned toward Nathaniel and Penny.

“The patient just woke up and needs quiet. Visitors need to leave.”

Nathaniel didn’t move.

He reached out as if he wanted to touch my shoulder.

I turned my head away.

Don’t touch me.

Disgusting.

His hand froze in midair, and his body swayed.

“Lena…”

But somehow, he seemed to hear mine.

My phone vibrated on the nightstand.

Julian had sent me several messages.

[I just heard you were injured.]

[I’ll ask HR to hold the position for a few days.]

[Lena, the opportunity is still yours. Don’t push yourself.]

My eyes burned as I read the words.

He couldn’t hear my thoughts.

Yet he understood exactly what I needed most.

I sent back two words.

After five days of recovery, I could finally get out of bed.

I refused to let Nathaniel into my room.

So he slept in the hallway every night.

When he saw me dressed and ready to leave, he came over with his anger barely contained and snatched my bag away.

“Lena, you’re still this badly hurt, and you’re going to see Julian Shaw?”

I looked at him.

In the past, I would have heard his thoughts at a moment like this.

I would have heard that he really wanted me to stay.

Only silence.
