He Tricked Me With Fake Papers, So I Sued for a Million Chapter 06

Early the next morning, Adrian went to the hospital.

Adrian’s mother was propped up against the pillows. The moment she saw him, she burst into tears.

“I can’t get through to Lauren, and she blocked me on Messenger too. What is she trying to pull? If she won’t take care of me, who will?”

Adrian paid the outstanding hospital bill, then sat down beside her bed.

“Mom, she’s gone.”

“She found out the marriage certificate was fake.”

Adrian’s mother’s expression shifted. She wiped away her tears.

“So she knows. She got to be Mrs. Mercer for five years without even being legally married to you. What more could she possibly want?”

Listening to his mother, Adrian felt utterly drained.

It was not that he had never imagined me leaving. Over those five years, he had pictured it countless times. He had imagined me finally breaking down, sobbing and dropping to my knees as I begged him not to leave.

He had thought that would set him free, allowing him to run to Vanessa without guilt.

But I had simply left in silence. I had not screamed, smashed anything, or caused a scene.

I had not even shed a single tear in front of him.

Unease began to settle inside him, leaving a hollow ache in his chest.

He stood up and said wearily, “Just focus on getting better. I’ll handle things with Lauren.”

Adrian’s mother slapped the edge of the bed. “Handle what?”

“Bring her back. I need someone to take care of me, and someone has to manage everything at home. Don’t tell me you’re actually planning to build a life with Vanessa. She can’t even wash a dish.”

Adrian said nothing more. He turned and left the room.

The sharp smell of disinfectant in the hallway made his temples throb.

He pulled out his phone and tried my number again.

The same cold automated message answered him.

Standing outside the hospital and watching traffic stream past, he suddenly had no idea where to go.

There was no point in going home. I was no longer there.

But if he went to Vanessa, she would only curl up in his arms and act sweet. She had never helped him solve a single real problem.

For the first time in five years, Adrian felt helpless.

After hesitating for a long time, he finally decided to go home.

As he entered the condo complex, the building manager stopped him and handed him a delinquency notice. The HOA dues were overdue,

and both the electric and gas accounts were past due.

Adrian went to the utility service office listed on the notice. When the clerk asked for the account numbers, he searched through his phone but could not find them anywhere.

The man waiting behind him finally lost his patience.

“Come on, man. Go home, find the paperwork, and come back. You’re holding up the whole line.”

Humiliated, Adrian stepped aside.

Only then did it occur to him that I had always handled every one of these tedious details alone.

The moment he opened the front door, a foul stench hit him so hard that his eyes watered.

The refrigerator had been without power for too long, and everything inside had begun to rot.

Frowning, he started throwing the spoiled food away.

Then he noticed that most of it was beef and shrimp, all foods he loved.

I hardly ever ate either of them.

Only then did Adrian realize that even though he rarely came home, I had still kept his preferences at the center of my life.

He suddenly remembered our anniversary a few days earlier and the table full of his favorite dishes I had prepared.

All I had asked was for him to stop seeing Vanessa and come back to our life together.

He had responded by losing his temper and slamming the door behind him.

The memory made him want to slap himself.
