By the time I got there and sat down, a message from Damon popped up.

[Location]

[I’m eating here. Come if you want.]

[Or don’t. Up to you.]

That sounded like sulking to me.

Yeah, right. Like I cared.

[Not going.]

His reply was instant: [Suit yourself.]

I put my phone away and dug in.

If I was miserable, I might as well eat my feelings.

During dinner, Jasper tried making conversation a couple of times.

I barely responded.

After all, he was still technically a love rival.

Even if Damon had never seemed interested in him.

Eventually, I drank too many refills and had to find the restroom.

It was my first time here, so I wandered around for ages before finally finding the women’s room.

After washing my hands, I pushed open the door to what I thought was our private room-and froze.

Damon was sitting at the head of the table, casually scrolling through his phone. He didn’t look happy.

One of the women at the table noticed me and looked surprised.

“Oh? Aren’t you Damon’s girlfriend? That was fast.”

Damon’s head snapped up.

The next second, he was right in front of me. A knowing smile tugged at his lips.

“I knew you couldn’t stay away.”

“If you wanted me to come home early, you could’ve just texted.”

“You actually came all the way here. So clingy.”

Wait. He was having dinner here too?

No. More importantly, he thought I was being clingy again.

I rushed to explain. “I didn’t know you were here. I came with friends.”

“You guys enjoy yourselves. I won’t bother you.”

“I definitely won’t cling to you.”

Damon fell silent.

After a long pause, he finally asked, “Friends? Who?”

“Nerissa!” Before I could answer, Jasper walked over, completely oblivious.

He stopped when he saw Damon.

“Damon? What a coincidence.”

Damon’s hand slowly curled into a fist at his side.

Through gritted teeth, he said, “So he’s the ‘friend’ my Nerissa was talking about.”

He deliberately stressed the “my.”

The tension in the room instantly doubled.

Someone from Damon’s table walked over.

The woman from earlier casually rested a hand on his shoulder, smiling as she spoke.

“Damon, she’s just having dinner with a friend.”

“Is it really that big a deal?”

I stared at her hand. A knot twisted in my chest.

She was seriously doing this right in front of me?

I was only trying to change so Damon wouldn’t break up with me.

As long as we hadn’t broken up, I was still his girlfriend.

I reached for Damon’s hand.

Before I could pull him away, someone cut in.

“Natalie. When you had dinner with your guy friend the day after you got back from overseas, didn’t your husband get jealous?”

My hand stopped in midair.
