The Girl They Ignored Got Married, Then They Regretted Everything Chapter 08

Married life was full and rewarding.

Adrian refused to let me sit idle. He brought me into the family company and made a point of telling

everyone that I was his wife.

But he still made me start at the entry level and work my way up.

In the mornings, I sat in on department–head meetings as a junior administrative assistant.

By midday, I rotated through the product development team, helping wherever I was needed while learning

how products were researched and developed.

In the evenings, I accompanied Adrian to client dinners, though he never let me touch a drop of alcohol.

Surrounded by the Sinclair family’s care, I began to bloom like a rose.

For the first time, I was becoming the most confident and radiant version of myself.

My parents never stopped contacting me.

I never blocked their numbers or deleted their messages, but I never replied.

They said they loved the gifts from the Sinclairs and wanted to send something in return.

They insisted that the demand for half a million dollars had only been spoken in anger and told me not to take it seriously. They said it mattered to know your family still had your back after you got married.

They told me Lucas was unreliable. Everything he wore and used had apparently been paid for by Chloe.

But Chloe was blinded by love and absolutely refused to leave him.

She was still waiting for the condo renovations to be completed so the two of them could move in together.

Day after day passed without a response from me.

My parents‘ messages became increasingly harsh. They accused me of being selfish and ungrateful and

even threatened to disown me.

As more time passed, however, their anger turned into pleading.

They said they loved me.

I didn’t believe them.

A year later, Grant messaged me to say Mom was sick.

Adrian came back to Providence with me.

When we reached the hospital, Mom was lying in bed in a pale blue hospital gown.

Her cheeks were hollow, and her cheekbones stood out sharply. In only a year, she had become painfully

frail.

The moment she saw me, her eyes reddened. She raised one hand toward me.

“Evelyn, you finally came to see me!”

“I’ve missed you so much!”

I remained where I was.

Adrian gave my shoulder a reassuring squeeze, then stepped out to find her doctor.

Mom kept her hand suspended in the air, stubbornly waiting for me to cross the room and take it.

After a long silence, I spoke.

“How are you feeling?”

Her hand froze.

Then, as though she could no longer bear to hold it up, it dropped heavily onto the bed.

“Evelyn, do they treat you well?”

“I’ve messaged you every day. Why haven’t you answered me?”

“Why haven’t you come home?”

I shook my head.

“I’m married. The Sinclairs are my family now.”

“Besides, I was afraid there wouldn’t be a place for me if I came back.”

The smile on Mom’s face stiffened. She spoke quickly, her voice seemingly full of guilt.

“No. Your room is still there. I’ve kept it exactly as it was.”

“Evelyn, with you gone, no one helps me with the housework. I’m exhausted. Everything has been so difficult.”

“I neglected you all these years. I was wrong. Can you forgive me?”

I looked at her gaunt frame, my fists tightening as I swallowed every cruel thing I wanted to say.

“Didn’t I give you all that money? How did you still wear yourself down this badly?”

Mom’s face immediately lit up.

Her voice grew louder.

I knew it. You care about me more than anyone else in this family.”

“That money… we used it for Chloe’s studies abroad.”

My heart turned to ice.

They were still the same.

They had never changed.

“She’s working very hard, and she’s almost finished.”

“But half a million dollars wasn’t enough. She only has one year left before graduation. Could you ask your husband’s family for another hundred and fifty thousand?”

When she saw my expression darken, she quickly changed her tune.

“No, make it one hundred and twenty thousand. Even seventy–five thousand would do.”

“That’s the absolute minimum.”

I stared at her, convinced she had lost her mind.

Even lying there sick, she was still planning everything around Chloe.

Maybe even the illness was nothing more than leverage to lure me back.

I locked eyes with her and spoke each word clearly.

“Absolutely not.”
