Replaced by a True Prince, Your Failure Means Nothing Chapter 10

I slipped into my boyfriend’s arms, then took his hand and waved it at them with a bright smile.

I’d told everyone ages ago that I was seeing someone. My mom had been bugging me nonstop all summer to bring him home, so I finally caved and brought him back with me.

My boyfriend glanced at the pair across the sand, his tone faintly jealous.

“Your ex?”

I grinned and teased him relentlessly.

“Someone’s jealous! So jealous!”

Later that night once we got home, my phone blew up out of nowhere. A friend still studying at HSU spammed me screenshots from the campus confession page, blowing up my messages.

Friend: [Wait wait—did you see this? Joren and Maren just blew up on each other.]

I froze for a second and scanned the posts. They were full-on fighting in the comments.

Joren was denying they were ever official. Maren was dragging him for being a two-faced liar and playing her.

I honestly couldn’t look away. For one second, I almost regretted unfollowing that page.

After I finished reading, I looked around my room and realized I still hadn’t cleaned them out completely. I’d gotten rid of their stuff before, but I’d clearly gone too easy on it.

I dug out every single gift, every little thing they’d ever given me—anything that had anything to do with them. I carried it all over and dumped it right on their front doorstep.

They were still awake. The door swung open almost immediately.

Joren’s lips pressed together tightly, his voice rough and hesitant.

“Wynne.”

“I cut things off with Maren. Can we… at least be friends again?”

Maren stood right beside him, staring at me nervously, waiting for my answer.

I brushed my hands clean of dust, completely unfazed.

“Nope.”

“My boyfriend gets jealous.”

He heard how plain and unyielding my words were, how there wasn’t an ounce of longing left in me. Joren went still, unable to say a word.

After that day, they never tried to reach out to me again.

I heard from neighbors around the neighborhood that things fell apart completely between Joren and Maren too. They lived in the same small community, but they avoided each other like the plague. They never crossed paths if they could help it.

Their grades tanked badly. Both failed several courses. Joren especially—he’d skipped tons of lectures while he was dead set on tracking me down. By senior year, he could barely keep up, graduation hanging by a thread.

Meanwhile, I joined Vallis U’s research lab full-time during my fourth year. Right after graduation, I landed an amazing job offer.

Sometimes my mom would call me, sighing over how terribly the two of them had turned out.

My boyfriend would pull me close and ask softly, “Do those bad memories still bug you?”

I’d just smile and shake my head.

“Not at all. I’m totally happy with where I am now.”

I tilted my head up and kissed him. “Besides… I’ve got you.”

I no longer had people dragging me down or messy drama weighing on me anymore.

Romance was never gonna be my whole world.

I had my future to build, step by step. I didn’t have a single second to waste on meaningless toxicity.
