Thirty Years Of Marriage I Thought Was A Mistake Chapter 03

I held the black card and tried to think of more ways to spend money.

In my previous life, Adrian had arranged almost everything for me, from my clothes to my meals. There had been very few things I needed to pay for myself.

Food had always been my biggest expense, but even a lavish meal only ran a few hundred dollars.

The moment I thought of the truffle lobster bisque from my favorite fine-dining restaurant, nausea surged through me.

I crouched by the side of the road and dry-heaved for a long time before it finally passed.

I had probably been eating too much takeout lately. My stomach must have been upset.

For an entire month, money had been pouring out of the account linked to the black card as though it were bottomless.

Adrian never contacted me about it.

The card wasn’t frozen either.

At one point, I even wondered whether he had forgotten the card existed.

One day, I was eating takeout at home and watching a show when a news alert suddenly popped up on my phone.

#PrescottHoldingsFacesBankruptcy#

My fork slipped from my hand and clattered onto the table.

I might have made a terrible mistake.

Had I spent so much of Adrian’s money that I had driven his company into bankruptcy?

The comments erupted into an argument.

[The female supporting character bankrupted Mr. Prescott! I knew she was a walking jinx!]

[That doesn’t make sense. She bought another commercial property half an hour ago, and the black card still worked.]

[It probably won’t work now. The company is bankrupt!]

I abandoned my food, pulled on a jacket, and ran downstairs to the convenience store outside my apartment complex.

I bought a pack of gum and handed over the black card at the register.

The terminal beeped.

**Payment approved.**

It still worked?

I immediately hailed a cab and headed straight for Prescott Holdings.

I ran into Vincent outside the building.

“Is the news true?” I grabbed his sleeve, my voice trembling with panic.

Vincent nodded, his expression grim.

“Is it… because I spent too much money?” My voice grew quieter with every word.

Vincent blinked in surprise.

He clearly hadn’t meant to tell me, but I must have looked so miserably guilty that he finally relented.

With a sigh, he said, “This has nothing to do with you. Ms. Whitmore set the whole thing up with outside investors to short Prescott Holdings and pressure Mr. Prescott into marrying her.”

I stared at him blankly.

“Aren’t they childhood sweethearts? I thought they were in love.”

Vincent looked at me as though I had just said something incredibly stupid.

“Who told you that? Mr. Prescott has never been interested in Ms. Whitmore. He can barely be bothered to speak to her.”

I had no response.

All I could think about were the comments from my previous life claiming that the male lead only had eyes for the first love he could never forget.

So who was lying?

Vincent took me upstairs to Adrian’s office.

Adrian sat behind his desk with dark circles beneath his eyes. He looked as though he hadn’t slept properly in days.

The moment he saw me, he froze and immediately stood.

“What are you doing here?”

I pulled the black card from my pocket and held it out to him.

“I spent thirty million dollars of your money. I’m giving the card back. The condos I bought will be purchased by a developer for three times their current value in three months, and the stocks I invested in have already tripled. That should help you get through this.”

Adrian didn’t take the card.

Instead, he reached out and touched my cheek, his brow tightening.

“The properties and stocks you chose were excellent investments. You clearly have good instincts, so keep the card.”

“But your company is going bankrupt. Your corporate accounts could be frozen in a few days.”

I tried to force the card into his hand.

He slipped it straight back into my pocket.

“Nothing that happens to the company will affect this card.”

“Why?” I asked without thinking.

The comments immediately followed.

[We would also really like to know!]

[Maybe Mr. Prescott is only pretending to go bankrupt. Is he putting on a show for Vanessa?]

[No way. It’s all over the news, and Prescott Holdings is close to being delisted.]

[If the black card still works, why doesn’t he use the money in that account to save the company?]

Adrian didn’t answer.

He simply watched me for a long moment.

“Why do you look so pale? Stop scaring yourself. Your spending had nothing to do with what happened to the company.”

[Ha! The female supporting character is white as a sheet. She’s kind of adorable.]

I opened my mouth to say more, but my vision suddenly went dark.

Just before I lost consciousness, I thought I felt Adrian catch me.

When I woke again, I was lying in a hospital bed with the sharp scent of antiseptic in the air.

Adrian was holding my hand. Barely restrained excitement shone in his red-rimmed eyes.

“You’re six weeks pregnant.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

The comments exploded.

[Holy shit! The female supporting character is pregnant? I thought they never had children in their previous life!]

[Wait, something is wrong with the way Mr. Prescott is looking at her. Why does he seem so happy? He looks more excited than he would after closing a multibillion-dollar deal!]

[Holy shit, I’m completely lost now! Who is Adrian actually in love with? Can the woman he loves really be that clueless receptionist? I refuse to believe it!]

[I think I finally know why that black card never stopped working!]

My mind went completely blank, as though my brain had short-circuited again.

Adrian and I had been married for thirty years in my previous life, but we had never had children.

I had always assumed it simply wasn’t meant to happen. Once we grew older, I eventually stopped hoping for one.

But now, I was pregnant.

“You’re very run-down. You need proper rest and nutrition.”

Adrian’s voice pulled me back to the present.

He was still holding my hand. His palm was warm, and his thumb moved unconsciously over the back of my hand.

Only then did I notice that his fingers were trembling.

Adrian, the man at the helm of Prescott Holdings and one of the most powerful figures in the business world, was trembling.

“Could you… keep the baby?” he asked cautiously.
