Four hours later, the plane touched down in Boston.

The air here was drier than in Blackthorn, and the sunlight felt different-sharp and wide-open.

Outside the terminal, a shuttle bus waited with a banner across the side: Royal Warrior University.

I exhaled, long and slow, like I’d been holding my breath for years.

Eighteen years of weight lifted off my chest in a single breath.

On the bus, a bubbly Beta girl dropped into the seat next to me.

“Are you in STEM too? I’m Laura Bennett.”

“Amelia.” I smiled. “Physics.”

“Oh wow, a brainiac!”

Her eyes went wide. “That’s like the hardest program here.”

I watched the unfamiliar streets blur past the window and caught myself smiling.

So this was what it felt like for someone to hear my name and think smart, not sad.

I got through check-in and picked up my dorm key.

The room was a quad setup, bigger than I expected. Through the window, the campus quad

stretched out under a canopy of maple trees.

I hung my clothes in the closet. With the money Grandma transferred, I walked to the campus store and bought the cheapest plain bedding set they had.

When the bed was made, I sat down at the desk and just looked at it. Empty and clean and mine.

For the first time, I had a desk no one could take from me.

A thousand miles away, at Blackthorn Pack University.

Caleb leaned against his car outside the dorms, staring at his phone. His jaw was set.

A red exclamation mark sat next to his last message.
