The Comments Shipped Him with Her, but He Loved Me Chapter 06

Couldn’t the writer at least add some emotional buildup?

Still, as long as there’s action to watch, I didn’t really care.

Back in the old days, I’d skip the buildup and jump straight to the good stuff anyway.

Hehe.

“Miss, what are you doing here?”

Dylan had appeared behind me out of nowhere, startling me.

“Where’s your brother?” I asked curiously.

“He’s out back digging. You said you wanted baked sweet potatoes, so he’s planting some for you.

Dylan crossed his arms and gave me a sour look.

He actually had a decent build too-nice chest-just a worse attitude.

But before the apocalypse, he’d been a minor pop star, so a bit of ego was expected.

“Dylan, you seem off today,” I said, frowning at him.

“Off how?” He dropped his arms, suddenly looking awkward.

Even a year into the apocalypse, he still cared about his image-true celebrity mindset.

Besides ordering Damon around, I loved bickering with Dylan.

It was my little daily pleasure.

I reached out and tapped him lightly on the nose.

“Off in a cute way.”

I winked at him, and while he sputtered and stammered, I walked off.

Got him again. So much fun.

But the comments mentioned Fiona and Damon awakening powers.

I wondered what kind they’d get.

Just as I was puzzling over it, Sean, who guarded the gate, came running up to me in a panic.

“Miss, bad news!”

“The zombies outside seem to have mutated!”

“They’re climbing the walls, and our catapults aren’t enough!”

I hurried up to the wall, shocked.

Below, zombies were piled high, snarling and climbing like spiders-they just wouldn’t fall.

“Go get Damon!”

Then I added, “And Fiona, too!”

Maybe this would be the moment they awakened their powers.

Our base’s only defense was that thirty-foot wall.

If the zombies made it over, hundreds of people would be done for.

The thought sent a chill down my spine.

Soon Damon and Fiona arrived.

The catapults were spent, and the zombies kept coming.

“Get the gasoline!” Damon shouted. Someone brought it. He poured it down, tossed a torch after it,

and the base of the wall went up in flames.

The surviving zombies shrank back in fear.

I was trembling all over. The next second, Damon covered my eyes and carried me-since my legs

were too weak to stand-back toward my room.

“Don’t worry. I’ll hold the line. They won’t get up here,” he said softly.

I nodded.

Inside, I was hoping Damon and Fiona would awaken their powers soon.

Wave after wave of zombies attacked for an entire week.

Our gasoline ran out. Damon took his squad as the first line of defense on the wall, waiting for the

zombies to come up.

Those of us without combat skills were in the last group-me and the elderly, the sick, and the weak, gathered behind the base near the back hill.

The hill led to the ancient forest.

If the front line fell, our only escape was into that forest-everyone for themselves.

As we waited, lightning suddenly flashed across the sky.

Then another strike. And another. Hundreds.

“Whoa…” I stared up in awe. All the bolts seemed to converge on one spot.

Was someone’s power awakening?

Then came hail-all of it falling on the same spot.

Now I was sure: Fiona and Damon had awakened their powers.

One could command lightning; the other, hail.

Oh my god.

They were literally the chosen ones.
