I Upgraded To First Class And Downgraded Him To Ex-Husband Chapter 05

Caleb stood rigid on the spot.

His voice trembled uncontrollably.

“Buddy, don’t joke around. This is my wife’s place. We just went on a honeymoon…”

The burly man spat impatiently.

He turned around, grabbed a piece of paper from the shoe cabinet, and with a “slap,” flung it onto Caleb’s chest.

“I don’t give a damn who your wife is. The title was transferred ages ago.”

“Look clearly. Copy of the deed.”

“If you don’t get lost right now, I’m calling the cops to arrest you for trespassing!”

With that, the door was slammed heavily shut.

Patricia collapsed onto the hallway floor.

Slapping her thighs, she began to wail dryly.

“What a sin! That woman actually sold the Reed family’s house!”

“Where are we supposed to live now!”

“Why is my fate so bitter, bringing a curse of a daughter in law into this family!”

Caleb fumbled frantically to pull out his phone.

Furiously dialed my number.

All that came from the earpiece was a mechanical female voice.

“Sorry, the number you have dialed is not in service.”

He switched to a voice call on WhatsApp.

“You are not yet friends with this user.”

Jenna shrieked from nearby.

She pointed at a battered cardboard box in the corner of the hallway.

“Bro, look! Isn’t that your wedding photo?”

Caleb lunged over.

Rummaged through the cardboard box.

Inside lay the wedding photo, cut in half.

His half was covered in dust all over the face.

At the very bottom of the box, a white envelope was pressed.

With trembling hands, Caleb tore open the envelope.

Inside were several signed copies of the divorce agreement.

On the first page, in bold letters, it read:

“The husband leaves the marriage with nothing.”

No disputes over property division, because everything in the house had been bought by me.

The only thing under his name was a commuter car still on a loan.

He abruptly sprang to his feet.

Dragging his suitcase, he ran out.

“She must just be throwing a tantrum,” he muttered to himself.

“I’ll go block her at her company. She can’t possibly just give up her job.”

Patricia shouted from behind: “Caleb, you’re not going to look after us? Where are we going to sleep tonight?”

Caleb didn’t look back.

He rushed out of the residential complex and hailed a cab, heading straight for my company.

At that very moment, I was sitting on an interstate express train heading south.

Outside the window was pitch black night.

Inside the carriage, some people were talking quietly on the phone, some were watching shows on their tablets.

I took my now defunct phone SIM card out of my bag.

Snapped it in half.

Tossed it into the trash bag in front of my seat.

I inserted a newly bought SIM card and re registered a new WhatsApp account.

Put on my noise-canceling headphones and clicked on a soft music track.

The seat was very comfortable, the air conditioning was strong.

I closed my eyes.

No Patricia’s snoring.

No Jenna’s pestering for designer bags.

No Caleb’s matter-of-fact “you just be the bigger person.”
