After a moment, he asked in a low voice, “Do you hate me?”

“Because of me, you lost your best friend.”

“And because of me, you wasted eight years of your life.”

I let out a soft laugh.

“Tomas, don’t give yourself so much credit.”

“I don’t love you anymore. So I don’t hate you, either.”

He froze. “Are you… are you doing okay now?” he finally asked.

“Pretty good,” I said.

I leaned against the railing along the sidewalk and talked about my life.

“The weather here is nice. It’s not too crowded.”

“I got a job at a travel agency. I take tourists on guided

tours.”

“When I save up enough money, I’ll move on to the next

place.”

“I leave when I want to leave. I stay when I want to stay.”

As he listened, his chest grew tighter and tighter.

The old me had never talked about the future like this.

Before, whenever I mentioned the future, my sentences were always filled with “we.”

Now, there was only “I.”

We stood outside the cafe for a long time.

The sky slowly darkened, and the streetlights flickered

on.
Tomas was still clutching his empty coffee cup, looking

lost.

I lifted a hand and pointed to a trash can nearby.

He walked over, threw it away, then came back and stood in front of me again.

“You should go home,” I said.

He shook his head.

“Not yet.”

I didn’t push it. Instead, I led him to a small restaurant I frequented.

The place was cozy, serving local, home–style food.

The owner knew me.
