Betrayed During My Engagement Party Chapter 07

Betrayed During My Engagement Party Chapter 07

It had been only a month since that ridiculous engagement party.

Silco’s company went belly–up, and the debt collectors had him dodging calls and hiding out.

The man who used to strut around was now a joke in the industry.

The court stepped in and froze whatever assets he had left. He couldn’t touch a dime.

I stopped keeping tabs on Silco and Luna.

But news had a way of finding me.

That noon in the company cafeteria, two coworkers at the next table were chatting loudly.

“Did you see? That guy Silco’s business is toasted.”

“Who’s Silco?”

“You know, the fiancé who confessed to cheating at his own engagement party.

“Ohhh, that guy?”

“Yeah. He used Mel’s connections to land a bunch of projects. They all pulled out, Nobody wants to work with him.”

“Serves him right.”

I kept my head down and sipped my coffee.

Another coworker lowered her voice.

“What about that woman, Luna? How’s she doing?”

“Worse. All her boyfriends dumped her. Except one, and I heard he’s some sixty–something old man with a violent

streak.”

“Holy crap…”

“Remember herInstagramflex? Diamond rings, designer bags–she scammed them all. Karma’s here.”

My phone buzzed.

Mia texted.

“Guess what I just saw?”

I texted back.

“What?”

“Luna’s working at a grocery store. Yep, a grocery store. Cashier.”

I didn’t reply.

“Someone posted a pic in the group chat. She’s lost a ton of weight and looks like hell.”

I still didn’t reply.

Mia sent another one.

“Mel, do you feel sorry for her?”

I thought about it and texted back.

“Not my business.”

I put my phone away and went back to my desk.

I was buried in the core project Alex gave me. I practically lived at the office–drafting plans, talking partnerships, and putting together proposals. Busy, but fulfilled.

Mia said I shone a hundred times brighter now than when I was with Silco.

I looked in the mirror. There were dark circles under my eyes, but there was a steady light behind them.

Yeah.

I left the man who drained me for ten years. I left the “sister” who betrayed me for twenty–two years. I finally became myself.

No more tiptoeing around other people’s moods. No more paying for someone else’s life. No more feeding my heart to assholes.

Sunlight poured in and lit up the project plan. Every word was sharp.

I was grateful I got out of that black hole in time.

No looking back. No second thoughts.

Trash people and trash drama should stay in the past.

I was walking towards the light.

At the end of the day, Alex passed by my desk.

“Still here?”

“Gonna stay a bit.”

“Don’t stay too late.”

“Yeah.”

He took a couple steps, then came back.

“Mel.”

“Yeah?”

“You’re doing really well lately.”

“Thanks.”

He gave me a quick smile and left.

I kept drafting.

It got dark outside.

I was the only one left on the floor.

The keyboard clacked loud.

But I felt grounded.
