Betrayed During My Engagement Party Chapter 06

Betrayed During My Engagement Party Chapter 06

The Silco–and–Luna shitshow made the rounds in our circle.

The livestream didn’t hit the nationwide trending lists, but high society and the business crowd all got their laughs.

No one wanted to work with Silco anymore–he was buried in debt, and his reputation was in the gutter.

His company froze overnight, teetering on bankruptcy.

Then, word got out that Luna wasn’t some high–society princess at all. Her boyfriends dumped her one after another.

The few who stuck around were pervs with weird kinks, and they kept tormenting her.

In just a week, the two of them crashed from cloud nine straight into the gutter.

Me? I got a court notice. Silco’s debt would be forcibly collected.

Then, one early morning just after week since the engagement party…

I walked into the office area. A few coworkers looked up at me. Their gazes weren’t what they used to be.

Alex called me into his office.

The door was open. He was behind his desk. When he saw me, he stood!

“Mel, sit.”

I sat.

He slid a file toward me.

“Take a look.”

I opened it. It was an invitation to a high–end social gala.

“It’s next Saturday at the Cassi estate.”

He looked straight at me.

“The attendees are industry folks only. I want to take you.”

I looked up at him.

“Why me?”

“Because of your ability. You’re calm. Your professionalism.”

Then, he added more.

“You’re damn good. You’re the company’s pride. I believe you deserve to be seen.”

I met his eyes.

They were steady. No testing me, no flirting.

I tucked the invite into my bag.

“Thanks, boss. I’ll be there.”

Then, Saturday came.

I wore the couture dress he’d had ready for me and walked into the ballroom on his arm.

No leftover heartbreak. Just poise, elegance, and a cool, steady vibe.

At the party, Alex introduced me to every big shot in the field, patiently helping me build

“This is Mel, our best manager–calm, talented, and with real vision.”

my

network.

He never mentioned my looks. He praised my skills, my character, and my brain.

When people asked about my past, I told it straight. No shame, no resentment, just the facts.

People took me seriously. They praised how composed I was, and they respected my grit.

Halfway through, a man walked up with a drink.

“Ms. Mel. I’ve heard about you.”

I looked at him.

“About what?”

“About what happened at your engagement party.”

He smiled.

“It takes guts to do that. Respect.”

“Thanks.”

“If it were me, I couldn’t have stayed that calm.”

I swirled my glass.

“Getting mad doesn’t solve a thing.”

“True.”

He clinked my glass.

“If a project comes up, I’ll come to you first. I believe you’ll nail it.”

After he left, Alex stepped up beside me.

“How are you feeling?”

“Pretty good.”

“You’re even calmer than I thought.”

“Told you–I’m not nervous.”

He smiled.

After the dinner, he drove me home.

He parked downstairs but didn’t kill the engine.

“Mel.”

“Yeah?”

“We’ve got a new project. The critical one.”

He looked at me with a serious expression.

“I want you to lead it.”

I looked at him.

“Why?”

The cabin light was dim. His eyes were bright.

“Because you’re the most reliable person I’ve met.”

He smiled slightly.

“Not because you’re pretty. Because of your skills. Your cool head. Your self–control. Your smarts.”

He paused.

“And you run the numbers cleaner than I do.”

I couldn’t help laughing.

“I’ll send you the project brief on Monday. No rush. Read it first, then decide if you want it.”

“Okay.”

I got out and shut the door.

The headlights blinked once, then he pulled away.

I stood downstairs and looked up.

The sky was full of stars.

My phone buzzed.

It was a text from Alex.

“Night.”

I texted back.

“Night.”

Mia popped open a window upstairs and shouted down.

“Mel! Are you dating someone?”

“No!”

“Liar!”

I laughed and headed into the building.

The elevator climbed.

I watched the floor numbers jump one by one.

Life’s suprises? You just never know.

Then, it was Monday right after the morning meeting.

I took the project file, and it was heavy against my fingertips.

This packet was trust. A chance. A new start.

I suddenly thought of the mess at the engagement party, then looked at who I was now.

Life really was unpredictable.

But I finally got it. The tenderness, favoritism, and promises someone handed to someone could be yanked away anytime.

Only the skills, backbone, and dignity one earned for themselves were theirs alone for good.

That was the real ace up your sleeve.
