The Day I Stopped Holding This Family Together Chapter 05: What the Housekeeper Counted

The lawyer’s name was Ms. Reyes.

She was a small woman in a navy suit who looked at me across a glass conference table and said, “Tell me everything you ever did for that company, and don’t leave anything out.”

I started talking. Two hours later, I was still talking. By the time I left her office, she had a list of seventy-three documented contributions to Lawson & Associates — vendor contracts I had negotiated, pitch decks I had built, client dinners I had run, the entire infrastructure of the firm’s Austin expansion that I had managed while Cade was on a golf course in Pebble Beach.

“You weren’t an assistant, Mrs. Lawson,” Ms. Reyes said. “You were a co-founder without paperwork. We’re going to fix that.”

I drove back to Priya’s in a daze. My phone rang as I pulled into her driveway.

*Carmen Vega.*

Our housekeeper. Three years on payroll. Mother of a little girl named Sofia.

“Good morning, Mrs. Lawson. I’m sorry to bother you.”

“You’re not bothering me, Carmen.”

“Mr. Lawson called me this morning. He told me my services were no longer needed. He said to send my final invoice.”

I gripped the steering wheel. Carmen made forty-two dollars an hour and supported her daughter on it. Cade had just fired her for the crime of being a person I had hired.

“Carmen, I’m so sorry. I’ll cover your next two months while you find new work. I’ll Venmo it tonight.”

She was quiet for a moment.

“Mrs. Lawson. Can I tell you something?”

“Of course.”

“Last month I was dusting in the master bedroom. Mr. Lawson came out of the bathroom. He asked me where the laundry detergent was. He told me he couldn’t find the blue bottle.”

I closed my eyes. The detergent was in a clear dispenser. Second shelf. With a label I had printed and laminated.

“What did you tell him?”

“I showed him. He stared at it like he had never seen it before. Mrs. Lawson, he didn’t know what his own soap looked like. He didn’t know how to wash a shirt.”

“I know, Carmen.”

“There’s something else.”

“Tell me.”

“The week you went to Sedona. To your sister. I came to clean on Thursday like normal. There was a woman in your kitchen. She was making coffee with your espresso machine. She was wearing your robe.”

The world went very quiet.

“He told me she was a client. He told me not to mention it. He gave me a hundred dollars in cash.” Carmen’s voice cracked. “I am so sorry, Mrs. Lawson. I should have told you. I have a daughter. I needed the job. I am so, so sorry.”

“Carmen.” I made my voice as soft as I could. “It’s not your fault. None of it is your fault. I’m going to take care of you, do you understand? Send me the invoice. I will pay you directly.”

“Thank you. Thank you, Mrs. Lawson.”

I hung up.

I sat in Priya’s driveway in my idling car for ten minutes.

I had spent six years thinking my husband was distracted. Distant. Stressed. Hard to reach.

He had not been distracted. He had been *doing this on purpose.* He had been training me to ask for less, to expect nothing, to accept the smallest scraps of attention as love. And while I had been color-coding his son’s flashcards, his mistress had been wearing my robe in my kitchen and drinking my coffee.

I went inside. Priya took one look at my face and poured me a real drink at ten in the morning.

“What now?” she asked.

I pulled my phone out and opened the App Store. I downloaded the corporate job board I had heard Nadia Thorne mention on her podcast. I tapped on the search bar and typed my actual job description.

*Internal Project Coordinator. Operations Management.*

The market rates populated. *Base salary: $95,000 to $120,000.*

Cade had paid me forty thousand a year. He had gotten a wife, a stepmother for his son, and a senior project manager, all for the price of an entry-level clerk.

I started a new file on my phone.

I named it *Evidence.*

I began to type.
