Proposed to Him with a Deed but He Already Had a Child Chapter 08

On the video, a group of people crowded around my mother’s hospital bed and hurled abuse at her without

pause.

“You’re that homewrecker’s mother, aren’t you? This is karma. You deserve to have cancer!”

Their insults grew more vicious by the second. My mother curled beneath the blanket, so thin she barely

looked human.

She could no longer lift her head under the relentless abuse. Finally, she gripped the bed rail, forced herself

to stand, and walked barefoot toward the window.

When they realized she was about to jump, they showed no remorse. Instead, they egged her on.

“Go ahead and jump, you miserable old hag. Do it if you’ve got the nerve.”

The next second, my mother climbed over the windowsill without hesitation.

A dull impact sounded through the recording, followed by a chorus of screams.

Someone frantically made a phone call. Megan’s voice came through the speaker.

“Why are you panicking? The Caldwell family will make sure nothing happens to you.”

The ballroom fell completely silent.

The color slowly drained from Sabrina’s face, while Megan looked terrified.

Several guests gasped. Others covered their mouths and stepped back.

The same people who had once moved effortlessly through Port Haven’s business and political circles now

stared uneasily at one another.

I pulled a copy of my mother’s sealed medical records from my pocket.

“Ladies and gentlemen, I apologize for interrupting your evening. But I believe everyone here has the right to know what Sabrina Caldwell and her family have done over the past month.”

“The people in that video verbally abused my mother, who had liver cancer, for forty straight minutes on

Sabrina Caldwell’s orders. Their harassment drove her to jump to her death.”

Sabrina finally seemed to come back to herself. She lunged at me and tried to snatch the documents from my

hand, but I stepped aside.

“You’re lying! That video is fake! It’s been doctored!”

I looked down at her.

“The police can decide whether it’s real. I’ve already filed a report.”

“Manslaughter, evidence tampering, and obstruction of justice. How many years do you think those charges could cost you?”

Victor Caldwell’s eyes turned cold. He shot a look at the two security guards standing in the corner of the

ballroom.

They had barely started moving when the ballroom doors swung open.

Six uniformed officers entered. The lead officer showed his badge.

“Victor Caldwell, Sabrina Caldwell, we’re with the Port Haven Police Department’s Homicide and Financial Crimes units. You are under investigation in connection with a homicide and multiple financial crimes. We need you to come with us for questioning.”

Sabrina completely fell apart. She rushed toward Ethan.

“Ethan, help me! You promised you’d protect me!”

Ethan stepped back.

He looked at me with an emotion I could not read.

“Nora, you went to the police?”

I gave a faint smile.

“That’s not all. I also compiled the financial records from every transaction you handled for Caldwell Group

over the years and sent copies to the state attorney general’s public corruption unit and IRS Criminal Investigation.”

Everyone’s expression changed at once.
