The Heiress’s Reckoning: Canceling the $500M Trust Chapter 24

The Heiress’s Reckoning: Canceling the $500M Trust Chapter 24: The Abandonment

The sound of shattering crystal ripped through the ballroom.

Hundreds of glass shards rained down like jagged hail. The five-tier pyramid collapsed in a spectacular wave of destruction. Champagne exploded across Chloe’s teal dress, plastering the cheap velvet to her skin. She shrieked, slipping on the slick marble floor and landing hard on her hands and knees.

The waiter scrambled backward, apologizing profusely, but his voice was drowned out by the chaos.

“My dress!” Chloe wailed, spitting champagne from her lips. “Someone help me! I’m bleeding!”

She held up a hand. A tiny cut on her palm oozed red, mixing with the spilled alcohol.

The guards holding Marcus loosened their grip to avoid the spreading puddle of champagne. He wrenched his shoulder violently, breaking free from their hold. He didn’t run toward the exit. He didn’t try to escape the humiliation. He marched straight at Chloe.

She reached a dripping arm up to him. “Marcus, get me up! Tell them to pay for this!”

He didn’t take her hand. He swung his arm back and struck her across the face.

The smack echoed like a gunshot across the silent ballroom.

The crowd collectively gasped.

“Did he just hit her?” Mrs. Gable asked, her voice carrying over the silence.

“Disgusting,” Aristhone muttered, turning his back on the display. “Get these animals out of here.”

Chloe collapsed sideways into the broken glass. She clutched her red cheek, staring at him in absolute shock.

“You parasitic bitch!” Marcus roared. “You ruined my life!”

“I ruined yours?” Chloe shrieked, scrambling backward away from the sharp stems of broken flutes. “You told me you were a billionaire! You told me you owned Zenith! You said we’d be flying private to Monaco by Christmas!”

“I was on top of the world before you opened your mouth!” he spat. He kicked a broken champagne flute toward her. It shattered against the wall. “You manipulated me! You fed me lies about your old-money family! You said your father played golf with the mayor!”

“Because you were stupid enough to believe them!” Chloe yelled, pointing a shaking finger at him. “Look at you! You’re a pathetic, broke loser! You don’t even own the car you drive!”

“I gave you everything!” Marcus stepped closer, his fists clenched hard. “I divorced my wife for you! I threw away a ten-year marriage for a gold-digging fraud!”

“Your wife was a bore!” Chloe laughed, a hysterical, grating sound. “You couldn’t stand her! You told me she was a frigid, controlling nightmare! Don’t blame your failed marriage on me, you bankrupt idiot!”

“You sold my company’s secrets!” Marcus yelled. “You took out loans in my name! You maxed out credit cards I didn’t even know I had!”

“I needed that money to keep up appearances!” Chloe screamed. “You think I wanted to live in that cramped apartment? You promised me a mansion! You promised me a seat on the board!”

“I will destroy you,” Marcus snarled, lunging forward again.

A security guard caught him by the collar, yanking him back. “Hold it right there.”

“Get off me!” Marcus thrashed against the guard’s grip. “She stole my money! She forged that invitation!”

“You told me to get us in!” Chloe yelled, wiping blood from a scratch on her arm. “You begged me to find a way! You said you needed to meet the Wentworth executives!”

“Security, remove them,” an older gentleman in a tuxedo demanded. “This is a high-society event, not a street brawl.”

“Let them fight,” a younger socialite sneered, raising her phone to record the disaster. “It’s the most entertaining thing I’ve seen all night.”

I dragged my gaze away from the two of them. Where were the children?

A movement beneath the grand buffet table caught my eye. The white linen tablecloth shifted slightly.

Leo had his arms wrapped around his knees, pressing his back against a massive silver chafing dish. Mia huddled next to him, her hands clamped tightly over her ears. She was trembling so violently the table linens shook with her.

“Make them stop, Leo,” Mia whimpered, her voice barely carrying over the chaos.

“Shut up and keep your head down,” Leo hissed, burying his face in his rented tuxedo jacket.

“Dad is going to jail, isn’t he?” Mia cried, tears streaming down her face. “The police are going to take him.”

“I don’t know,” Leo snapped. “Just don’t look at them. Hide your face. Maybe nobody will notice us.”

“I want Mom,” Mia sobbed, wiping her nose on the expensive lace of her rented dress. “I want to go back to the estate. I want my old room.”

“She doesn’t want us anymore,” Leo muttered bitterly, peering through the gap in the tablecloth. “We picked the wrong side. We’re on our own now.”

The air in the ballroom thinned out. My lungs burned with every breath. My chest constricted until it felt like a steel band was wrapping around my ribs. These people had shed every ounce of their humanity the second the money dried up.

I watched Marcus point a finger at the woman he claimed was his soulmate. I watched Chloe bare her teeth at the man she swore to love. They were rabid dogs fighting over a dry bone.

The farce had reached its absolute peak.

I tapped the small earpiece hidden beneath my hair.

“Elias,” I whispered. “Cut them off. Move to the main event.”

“Are you sure, Madam President?” Elias asked through the comms. “We can have them escorted to the local precinct first.”

“No. I want them to see this. I want them to know exactly who orchestrated their downfall.”

“Understood.”

Elias stepped forward on the stage, picking up the microphone. “Ladies and gentlemen, I apologize for the unscheduled entertainment. Please direct your attention away from the floor.”

Marcus spun around, pointing at Elias. “Don’t you ignore me! I demand to speak to whoever is running this operation! I have a business proposal! Zenith can bounce back! I just need bridge capital!”

Elias didn’t even blink. “Security, form a perimeter around the disturbance. Do not let them leave. The police have already been notified regarding the forged entry passes.”

“Police?” Chloe gasped, her face turning chalk-white. “No, no, I didn’t forge anything! He gave it to me!”

“Liar!” Marcus bellowed.

Four guards stepped in, boxing Marcus and Chloe into the center of the mess. They formed an impenetrable wall of black suits.

“Now,” Elias continued, his voice projecting across the silent, staring crowd. “Tonight is not about bankruptcies or petty frauds. Tonight is about the future of the Wentworth Consortium.”

The crowd murmured in agreement. Glasses clinked together.

“For the past ten years, our controlling shareholder has operated from the shadows,” Elias said. “She has guided our investments, structured our acquisitions, and built this empire stone by stone.”

Marcus stopped shouting. He wiped his mouth, his eyes darting frantically toward the stage.

“Who is it?” Aristhone asked aloud, stepping closer to the stage.

“It is my absolute privilege,” Elias boomed, “to introduce the true visionary behind the Wentworth Consortium. The architect of our success, and our President.”

I stood in the dark, listening to the silence that followed.

Every eye in the room was fixed on the empty stage.

I adjusted the heavy silk of my skirt. The fabric rustled, a harsh, dry sound that masked the frantic pounding against my ribs. I reached up and touched the cold diamonds resting against my collarbone.

This was the moment. The point of no return.

I stepped out from the shadows of the mezzanine.

My stilettos struck the wooden treads of the spiral staircase.

*Clack.*

*Clack.*

The sharp sound sliced through the heavy silence of the ballroom.

Marcus’s head snapped up.

Chloe’s jaw dropped.

Leo and Mia stared from beneath the tablecloth, their eyes wide and unblinking.

All four of them looked straight up to the top of the stairs.
