The Heiress’s Reckoning: Canceling the $500M Trust Chapter 22

The Heiress’s Reckoning: Canceling the $500M Trust Chapter 22: The Target Locked

“Where is she?” Marcus’s voice carried upward, thin and desperate.

He was squinting toward the mezzanine, his eyes darting across the shadows where I stood. From his vantage point, I was nothing more than a silhouette behind the gold-leafed balusters. He wiped a layer of grease from his forehead with the back of his hand.

“The socialite said she was right there,” Chloe whispered, her voice tight with a frantic kind of hope. “Marcus, if we don’t move now, we’ll lose the window.”

“I can’t see a damn thing with these chandeliers,” Marcus grumbled. He turned, his gaze landing on Leo and Mia.

“Leo, Mia, get over here,” he commanded.

I watched through the marble pillars. My son looked like he wanted to vanish into the floorboards. Mia was shivering, her hands balled into fists at her sides, the burgundy velvet of her dress bunching awkwardly.

“Go to the stairs,” Marcus said, shoving Leo’s shoulder. “Take your sister’s hand. Walk up there like you’re looking for the restroom. If you see a woman in diamonds, you tell her you’re my children. You tell her how much you’ve missed the ‘family atmosphere’ of the firm.”

“Dad, no,” Leo protested, his face turning a deep, shameful crimson. “Everyone is staring at us. We look like idiots.”

“You look like my ticket out of this hole!” Marcus snapped. He grabbed Mia’s arm, ignoring her wince. “Mia, look at me. Give them that pout. The one that used to get you extra dessert. Go. Now.”

“It’s too crowded,” Mia whimpered. “The guards look mean.”

“They won’t touch children,” Chloe added, smoothing Mia’s hair with a hand that shook. “Just go. Be charming. Remind them who your father is.”

Marcus gave them another forceful shove toward the grand staircase.

I felt a sharp, jagged pain behind my ribs. My fingers curled into the stone railing, my nails digging into the cold surface until the skin at the tips turned white. He was using them. He was using my children as human shields to bypass security.

I tapped the small comms unit clipped to my ear.

“Garrison,” I said, my voice a low, vibrating blade.

“Standing by, Madam President,” the security chief replied instantly.

“The targets are approaching the primary staircase. Intercept them.”

“Do you want them removed from the building?”

“No,” I said, watching Leo stumble over the first step. “I want them exactly where I can see them. Block the stairs. Drive them back toward the center of the ballroom.”

Below, Leo reached for the banister. A massive security guard in a black suit stepped into his path, his chest like a wall of granite.

“Stairs are closed for a private transition, kid,” the guard boomed.

“My—my dad is Marcus Vance,” Leo stammered, trying to puff out his chest. “We’re supposed to be up there. We’re VIPs.”

“I don’t care if you’re the Pope,” the guard said, placing a heavy hand on Leo’s shoulder. “Back it up. Move to the floor.”

“Hey!” Marcus shouted, scurrying over. He tried to wedge himself between the guard and his son. “That’s my son you’re touching! Do you have any idea who I am?”

“Sir, you need to step back,” a second guard said, appearing from the side. He didn’t ask. He moved with a mechanical precision, his arm extending to guide Marcus away from the marble steps.

“Don’t you lay a hand on him!” Chloe shrieked, drawing the attention of the surrounding billionaires.

The circle of elite guests widened. People began to whisper, their eyes tracking the commotion. The smell of expensive perfume and aged scotch seemed to vanish, replaced by the raw, electric scent of a public breakdown.

“Leo, get through!” Marcus yelled, his voice cracking. “Go find the CEO!”

“I can’t!” Leo yelled back, his voice hitting a high, panicked note.

The guards didn’t use excessive force, but they were relentless. They used their bodies to form a moving perimeter, funneling the four of them away from the exits, away from the stairs, and straight into the wide-open space in the middle of the room.

“Mom!” Mia cried out, her eyes searching the mezzanine again. “Mom, help!”

The word ‘Mom’ hit me like a physical blow. My lungs seized. For a fraction of a second, the urge to run down those stairs and shield her from the judgmental glares of the crowd nearly broke me. I could see the terror in her eyes—the genuine, soul-crushing fear of a child who realized she was a pawn in a game she didn’t understand.

I squeezed my eyes shut for a heartbeat.

*She chose them,* I reminded myself. *She called me a lunatic so she could stay in the penthouse.*

The coldness returned, settling into my marrow like frost. I opened my eyes.

“Garrison,” I whispered into the mic. “Now.”

“Copy that. Initiating the sequence.”

The guards stepped back in unison, leaving Marcus, Chloe, Leo, and Mia standing in a tight, confused knot in the dead center of the ballroom.

Marcus was panting, his tuxedo jacket riding up his back. Chloe was clutching her broken clutch to her chest, her lipstick smeared at the corner of her mouth. They looked like survivors of a shipwreck who had accidentally wandered into a palace.

The high-society guests fell silent. The clinking of silverware stopped. The air in the room grew heavy, expectant.

“What’s happening?” Chloe asked, her voice trembling. “Marcus, why are they all looking at us?”

“I don’t know,” Marcus muttered, his eyes darting around the room. “Maybe this is it. Maybe they’re going to introduce us.”

He tried to straighten his tie. He even managed to force a small, arrogant smirk onto his face, as if he were waiting for an award.

I reached out and gripped the master control switch on the mezzanine console.

The grand orchestral music, which had been playing a soft Vivaldi piece, suddenly cut off. The silence that followed was deafening, broken only by the hum of the ventilation system.

The house lights flickered once, twice, and then plunged the entire ballroom into total darkness.

A collective gasp rippled through the crowd.

Then, a single, violent crack of light split the blackness.

A high-intensity white spotlight dropped from the ceiling. It didn’t drift. It didn’t wander. It slammed down with surgical precision, pinning the four of them in a blinding, inescapable circle of white.

Marcus winced, raising a hand to shield his eyes. Chloe let out a small, sharp scream of surprise. Leo and Mia stood frozen, their shadows stretching long and distorted across the polished floor.

They were no longer guests. They were specimens under a microscope.

The silence stretched, agonizing and heavy, as every powerful person in the city stared at the four frauds caught in the light.

The mezzanine curtains behind me began to groan as they slid open.
