The Stray Cat I Fed Warned Me About My Two Faced Best Friend Chapter 05

I was about to tap the play button when Vanessa dragged herself off the floor and stumbled toward me.

Her clothes were soaked with blood, and her face was as white as paper. Somehow, she still found the strength to clamp one hand around my wrist.

“Natalie…”

Her lips trembled. She lowered her voice until only I could hear her.

“You can’t play it. Please.”

I looked at her without a trace of sympathy.

“Now you’re begging me? Did you think about this moment when you spiked my lemonade with a laxative?”

Tears spilled from Vanessa’s eyes. This time, the fear was real.

She tightened her grip on my wrist.

“I can explain.”

“Explain what?” I pressed.

Her mouth opened, but no answer came out.

The crowd around us immediately erupted.

A man in the plaid shirt held up his phone, still livestreaming, his voice rising with excitement.

“Okay, everyone, this just took a turn. The supposed victim is trying to stop her best friend from playing the footage. Why would she do that unless she’s hiding something?”

Comments flooded the livestream.

[So much for women supporting women.]

[Vanessa is definitely hiding something.]

[Play the video. We want the truth.]

Derek’s jaw tightened. He grabbed a fistful of Vanessa’s hair and yanked her away from me.

“What the hell are you doing? Let her play it! My son is dead, and you’re still protecting her? What’s wrong with you?”

Vanessa cried out in pain.

“Derek… she’s been my best friend since we were kids.. I don’t want to destroy her entire life.”

“Your best friend?”

Derek drew back his arm and struck her across the face.

“She killed my son, and you’re worried about your precious friendship? Are you in on this with her?”

Vanessa collapsed onto the floor, one hand pressed to her cheek. A thin line of blood appeared at the corner of her mouth.

When she looked up at me, her eyes were filled with desperation.

I knew exactly what she was doing.

She was betting that I’d give in.

All through our childhood, whenever Vanessa did something wrong, she only had to put on that wounded expression. My parents would remind me how difficult her life had been and ask me to forgive her.

But not this time.

I lifted my phone. The footage had finished loading.

“Since everyone wants to know what really happened…”

“Natalie!”

Vanessa screamed my name and lunged at me again.

“Don’t play it! If you do, my life is over. Your parents have always treated me like their own daughter. Do you really want to drag everything your parents built into this?”

The mention of my parents made my chest tighten.

Then the warning I’d seen above the stray cat’s head flashed through my mind.

[Your parents will be forced to close the restaurant and pay a massive settlement.]

I clenched my teeth.

When Vanessa realized I wasn’t backing down, the pleading look vanished. She leaned closer, and her voice turned sharp.

“You think that video will clear you? The restaurant camera already shows you taking the bag of wings out of your own shoulder bag.”

“Who do you think the police will believe, you or me?”

Her fingers dug into my arm.

“Stop now, and we can both walk away. I promise I won’t press charges.”

“You won’t press charges against me?”

A laugh escaped me.

“Vanessa, you never intended to keep that pregnancy in the first place, did you?”

Every trace of color disappeared from her face.

Her lips parted, but before she could answer, she suddenly pitched backward.

The back of her head struck the corner of the table with a sickening thud. Her eyes rolled back, and she went limp.

A woman nearby screamed.

“She passed out! Where’s the ambulance?”
