War started.

Small thing. Don’t even want to say it.

The night of the party. I drank a lot. Don’t remember who carried me home.

Woke up. My bed. Rocco on one side. Luca on the other.

Tried to move Luca’s hand. Too tight. Even asleep.

Tried to move around Rocco’s legs. Too long.

I lay there. Looking at the ceiling.

“Morning, boss.”

Luca’s voice. Waking up.

“You were awake?”

“For a while.”

“Why not say?”

“Wanted to see if you’d say first.”

Behind me. Rocco turned over. Back to us. Did not move.

But I knew he heard.

From that day. Rocco didn’t talk to me.

Not really. Not like before. Didn’t come for coffee. Didn’t sit in the living room. Didn’t walk in the garden.

Three days.

“He’s not mad at me,” I said. “He’s mad at himself.”

“Why?”

“Because he saw you carry me to bed. Thinks you stayed.”

“He came after. He didn’t see me leave.”

“Doesn’t matter. Thinks he lost.”

I went to his room.

Light on. At his desk. Paper in front of him. Coffee cold.

He didn’t look up.

“What.”

“To see if you’re alive.”

“Not yet.”

Red pen. Circle on the map.

“What’s that?”

“Places I could go.”

I stood by him. Numbers by each one.

“Those?”

“If I leave. How close to you. How safe. How easy to come back.”

“You’re leaving?”

“Do you want me here?”

I didn’t answer.

He looked up.

“If you want me here, I stay. I just don’t want you to have to choose.”

He stood up. Bigger than me. Looking down.

“I’m giving you a choice. Him. Both. Neither. Someone better. I won’t get in the way.”

I looked at him.

“You’re so stupid.”

“What?”

“I never said I was choosing.”

“You said first husband-”

“He lives in the main house. You live where you want. In *our* house. In *my* bed. In *my* life. How is that choosing?”
