My Pain Came Back Once They Betrayed Me Chapter 07

My voice was icy, as if I were recounting a stranger’s story.

Logan parted his lips, desperate to speak, yet no words came out.

I let out a scoff. “I only blocked your numbers and refused to return home, and that makes me cruel? What about the lot of you? You nearly took my life—how would you describe that?”

“I’m sorry.” After a long stretch of silence, Logan forced the three words out through trembling lips.

I didn’t spare him a single glance, stepping straight past him and hurrying away.

The Ford family still required Logan to oversee their business empire, so he departed that same night.

Before leaving, he left a handwritten note and bags of prepped fresh ingredients outside my front door.

The note said he’d return to see me in a week and urged me to eat well and take care of myself.

I used those seven days to pack my bags and relocate to a completely different apartment.

Once relocated, my life slipped back into its steady rhythm. A new researcher joined our institute: a young man two years my junior named Henry Grant.

He looked at me with bright, warm eyes, and we quickly grew close.

Logan tracked me down one afternoon while Henry and I were having dinner at a local restaurant.

He stood right beside our table, drained after flying over a dozen hours across oceans.

He glanced sharply at Henry, then turned to me. “Who is he?”

“That’s none of your concern.”

Logan raised his voice, frustration bubbling over. “You’re my fiancée. You’re meant to return home and marry me, to be with me—of course it’s my business.”

He’d flown thousands of miles only to find my old apartment empty, spending hours searching every corner to locate me. Now he walked in to see me dining intimately with another man.

Swallowing his frustration, he spoke to me softly. “Bella, I know I’ve made terrible mistakes. Can’t you grant me a chance to make amends?”

I met his gaze evenly. “A chance to make amends? Logan, if luck hadn’t been on my side that day, I would’ve lost every shot at living at all.”

Logan fell silent again.

“I’ll lay everything out plainly for you.” I stared straight at him. “All I want now is to live my own quiet life. How you and my family treat Zora doesn’t matter to me anymore.”

“I’ve run this far to escape all of you. Even if you claim you’re trying to make things right, please stop intruding on my life from this point on.”

Logan stared at me, his eyes heavy with exhaustion. Eventually, he turned and left without another word. Henry and I finished our meal together.

Some small part of my heart softened after that day. I unblocked my parents’ phone numbers and messages, only sending brief check-in texts to let them know I was alive and well, nothing more.

Half a year later, news reached me that Zora and Logan were getting married. The two families had dragged the engagement on for far too long, and both sets of parents refused to wait any longer.

Rumors circulated that their marriage was miserable from the start. Zora threw screaming fits every two or three days, begging Logan to love her, yet all she ever received in return was endless cold mockery.

They became infamous as a bitterly unhappy couple to everyone in their social circle.

Mom called me occasionally, her voice tinged with regret. “If you’d come back home, everything would’ve turned out differently, wouldn’t it?”

I let out a cold laugh and replied. “If I went back, and Zora framed me once again—whose side would you take then?”

Mom fell silent, and I hung up the call.

I started dating Henry, and we legally married overseas.

Henry was passionate yet endlessly gentle. He catered to my every need, listened patiently to every worry weighing on my heart, and always looked at me with the same bright, adoring glow as a loyal puppy.

In time, our research institute cracked the mechanisms behind countless rare diseases, and Henry’s name alongside mine made headlines across the globe.

This life was peaceful, fulfilling, and deeply happy—and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
