My brother and Elias reached downstairs almost at the same time.

The crowd was already in an uproar.

Screams rose and fell in waves; some people covered their mouths, and others turned away, unable to look.

They stopped hard at the edge of the police tape.

Neither of them dared to take another step.

Elias was deathly pale. His throat bobbed as he swallowed, and his voice came out so low it was almost inaudible. “Could it really… be her?”

No one answered.

My brother stood there like someone had yanked his soul right out of him.

He couldn’t force out a single word.

Then someone in the crowd suddenly cried out, voice cracking, “Isn’t that the girl from that viral… 1-vs-13 clip?”

That sentence stabbed straight through my brother’s chest. All the color drained from his face in an instant.

He shoved through the crowd and charged in, completely out of control.

It was the first time I’d ever seen my own corpse.

On the ground, my body lay twisted in a way no living person could hold.

The impact from the fall had warped my bones beyond what they could bear. My limbs splayed uselessly, my dress torn, dust and blood smeared together.

My neck was bent at a sick angle, and the eyes that used to shine so brightly were half-lidded now, hollow and dead.

Behind him, guests from the mating ceremony had run out too, and someone couldn’t help sighing.

“I saw her when I was a kid,” one person said quietly. “She used to smile so much. How did it end up like this?”

“Probably because she lost everything,” another murmured. “When someone reaches this point, it means they really have nothing left to live for.”

An elderly man let out a heavy breath and patted my brother’s shoulder. His tone wasn’t loud, but every word carried blame.

“Tessa was your only sister,” he said. “After what you did to her, when you meet your parents on the other side, will you even be able to look them in the eye?”

My brother didn’t answer a single word.

Because he was already dropping to his knees.

His knees hit the ground with a dull, brutal thud, like he couldn’t feel pain anymore.

He almost crawled, inching himself to my side.

Dust coated his suit, and his posture was so wretched it was hard to watch. There wasn’t a shred left of the Shadowrune Pack’s Alpha in charge.

He reached out, but the moment his hand was about to touch me, it started shaking violently.

“You… how could you be dead?” he whispered.

Something jolted in my chest, but the next second everything went quiet again.

I was dead already. Even if he knew, what could it change?

The police moved to take my body away.

My brother didn’t move at all, like an emptied-out shell.

Elias moved.

He suddenly lunged forward like a madman, wrapped both arms around me, and refused to let go.

“You can’t take her,” he roared. “None of you can take her away from me!”

The police tried to pry him off.

He clung tighter, like a feral animal, his voice wrecked and raw.

Mira finally ran out, urgency all over her face, still trying to keep her voice gentle.

“Bro, Elias,” she pleaded. “Can you two come back inside first?”

“The mate-bond ceremony isn’t over,” she said. “There are so many people watching. Whatever this is, we can finish the ceremony first.”

Elias didn’t seem to hear a word. He only held me tighter.

My brother finally moved.

He shook off Mira’s reaching hand. He didn’t explain anything, didn’t say a single word, and just grabbed Elias.

Together, the two of them held onto my body and got into the car without a sound.

Mira was left standing there alone.

She took a slow breath, pulled herself together, and forced a polite smile.

Then she turned to the guests who still hadn’t dispersed and said, “I’m so sorry about this.”

“Tessa’s emotions have always been unstable,” she went on, steady and sweet. “She picked the day of my mating ceremony on purpose to cause trouble.”

“Once my brother and the others handle her situation,” Mira said, “the mating ceremony will definitely continue.”

The guests wore all kinds of expressions.

After the venue finally emptied out, Mira’s smile snapped.

She shrieked, grabbed whatever was on the table, and slammed it onto the floor.

“I was so close,” she screamed. “I was about to seal my mate bond with Elias, and I was about to get Shadowrune Pack shares, and that bitch Tessa ruined everything!”

Her hysterical voice echoed through the cavernous, empty hall.

Then, mid-rant, she stopped.

Slowly, she smiled.

“Good,” she whispered. “It’s better this way.”

“From now on, no one can compete with me again.”

“My brother, Elias, the Shadowrune Pack,” she said softly. “It’s all mine now.”
