My Alpha Brother’s Regret Was Too Late Chapter 05

My Alpha Brother’s Regret Was Too Late Chapter 05

The instant I hit the ground, the pain didn’t come.

I thought I’d go home right away, but instead my soul drifted out of my body and kept circling my brother.

I felt helpless, but there was nothing I could do.

At least after death, every emotion was wiped clean, so all I could do was linger at the mating ceremony.

After that split-second of eye contact, my brother’s body went rigid.

For a heartbeat, it looked like he was about to sprint out.

But it only lasted an instant before reason snapped back into place.

“It can’t be Tessa,” he muttered under his breath, speaking too fast like he was forcing himself to believe it. “She wouldn’t kill herself. She wouldn’t leave me…”

I watched coldly from the side and felt nothing but irony.

My brother had always been like this.

Every time I told him Mira was hurting me, if he hadn’t seen it with his own eyes and heard it with his own ears, then it wasn’t real.

My brother drew a deep breath, then solemnly placed Mira’s hand into Elias’s.

“If Mira suffers even the slightest grievance, I won’t let you get away with it,” he said, stern and forceful. “You know what happens when you go up against the Shadowrune Pack.”

Elias nodded. “I’ll treat Mira like my treasure.”

Mira’s eyes reddened, and in that moment she looked exactly like a princess being cradled in the palm of someone’s hand.

I thought about it seriously and answered myself.

No, it wouldn’t happen again.

That was the truth.

I didn’t feel a thing anymore.

The officiant began to read the vows, slow and solemn.

But my brother seemed dazed for a moment.

Under the lights, the white veil was blinding.

Mira’s profile suddenly overlapped with an image buried deep in his memory.

In the moonlight, I leaned against his shoulder, and he smiled as he looked at me.

The picture shattered.

In its place was yesterday, when I collapsed at his feet, hatred and collapse twisting across my face.

All at once, my brother’s chest seized so hard he could barely breathe.

“Why…” he murmured, pressing a hand to his heart, brows drawn tight. “Why do I feel like I really did wrong her?”

The officiant’s voice rose again.

“Groom, do you—”

Right then, a torn, panicked scream ripped through the air outside.

“Someone jumped off the building!”

The entire venue went silent.

My brother’s head snapped up.

That fleeting look, that unexplained dread in his gut, clicked into place all at once.

His face drained white.

The next second, the last thread of restraint in his mind snapped, and he spun around like a madman, charging for the exit.

Mira grabbed his hand, her voice trembling.

“Bro, where are you going? The ceremony isn’t over!”

After this mate-bond ceremony ended, my brother was supposed to publicly announce that fifty percent of Shadowrune Pack’s shares would be transferred into Mira’s name.

Of course she couldn’t let him leave.

My brother didn’t bother explaining.

“Let go!”

Mira clung on even harder.

Elias frowned, his tone sharp with displeasure. “Are you backing out?” he demanded. “You promised those shares would strengthen the Ravenstone Pack.”

I froze slightly.

It was only in that moment that I realized Elias’s feelings for Mira might not be as pure as he wanted everyone to believe.

My brother’s heartbeat sped up faster and faster.

A terror he’d never known before surged up like it wanted to swallow him whole.

He jerked his arm hard.

Mira wasn’t ready, and she crashed to the floor.

The room erupted.

“Bro, that hurts!” she cried, her face twisting. “What are you doing—”

She didn’t finish.

My brother cut her off, his voice almost a roar.

“Elias,” he shouted, “the person who fell outside… I think it was Tessa!”

The moment the words left his mouth, he ran, not looking back even once.

Mira sat there, stunned.

Elias’s face changed instantly, and he took off after him.

In the vast venue, only Mira remained on the floor, facing a sea of guests whispering under their breath and staring at her with loaded eyes.
