At the Ashford estate, Lily cried in Grayson’s arms.

Her shoulders shook.

“Grayson, I never meant for this to happen.”

“She ran at me and tried to push me.”

“I moved away because I was scared.”

“Then she fell into the dog pen.”

Grayson sat on the sofa.

His hand moved slowly over Lily’s back.

He should have comforted her as he always did.

But Vivian’s blood-covered body would not leave his mind.

When the guard carried her away, her face had been almost colorless.

Her burned arms had not healed.

New wounds had torn through the old ones.

Blood had fallen from her fingers onto the floor.

Grayson frowned.

A heavy feeling sat inside his chest.

Lily noticed.

Cold fear moved through her eyes.

She quickly hid it.

“Grayson, are you worried about her?”

His voice was flat.

“Vivian is hard to kill.”

But his hand tightened around the arm of the sofa.

Lily saw it.

She had been with him for seven years.

“Get rid of the dogs.”

The butler looked confused.

“Sir?”

Lily became still.

“Grayson…”

His voice held no emotion.

“Did I speak unclearly?”

The butler lowered his head.

“No, sir. I’ll do it now.”

Lily’s face changed.

Grayson had chosen those dogs himself.

The most expensive one had cost more than a large house.

He cared for them more than he cared for most people.

Now he was sending them away because they had hurt Vivian.

Lily fought down her anger.

Her tears fell faster.

“Did I do something wrong?”

“Do you think what happened today was my fault?”

Grayson frowned.

“I didn’t say that.”

“But you think it.”

Lily bit her lip.

“Vivian was hurt, and you feel sorry for her”

“I understand.”

“She is your wife.”

“I’m only a woman with no true place here.”

Grayson’s eyes became colder.

“Lily.”

She pressed herself against his chest.

“I’m scared.”

“She put those pictures on the screen.”

“Today, she tried to push me into the dog pen.”

“I don’t know what she will do next.”

The small amount of doubt in Grayson’s face disappeared.

He remembered the photographs.

He remembered Vivian filing for divorce again and again.

He remembered every time she had fought him.

He touched Lily’s face.

“There won’t be a next time.”

Lily lowered her head.

But she did not feel safe.

Noise came from the garden.

The dogs growled as the staff led them away.

Several workers used long tools to clean blood and dirt from the pen.

One of them stopped.

“Sir, we found an inhaler.”

The butler took it.

Mud covered the white plastic.

One side had been crushed under a dog’s foot.

But the label could still be read.

The butler almost threw it away.

Then he stopped.

His face changed.

He carried it into the house.

“Sir.”

“This was in the dog pen.”

Grayson took it.

“Albuterol inhaler.”

His brow tightened.

He knew that medicine.

Mrs. Warren had asthma.

Everyone in the Ashford house knew.

She always carried an inhaler.

Why had it been inside the dog pen?

Grayson’s fingers closed around it.

A thought formed in his mind.

Maybe Vivian had not entered the pen to hurt Lily.

Maybe she had gone in to get the inhaler.

He looked up.

“Get the security footage.”
