I Played Shy to Dodge Her Traps Then the Impostor Snapped Chapter 07

My mom’s voice shook. “What did you just say? What are you trying to tell me?”

I pointed at her face. “Those dark spots. The bruising under your eyes. That’s not natural. That’s what the poison does to you.”

My adoptive mom was an herbalist. She spent years drilling this knowledge into me.

I wasn’t exactly an expert. I’d noticed something wrong with my mom’s face, but I couldn’t be sure what was causing it.

Not until I found out Hazel was willing to burn the house down with all of us inside.

That’s when the timing clicked. A month ago, right when my parents first found me and were still running DNA tests.

Hazel must have panicked. If I came back, she’d lose her hold on the family. So she targeted my mom first.

My mom staggered back a step, her finger trembling as she pointed at Hazel. “You… you actually drugged me?”

“Are you really… this much of a monster?”

Hazel’s face twisted. She whipped toward me. “You’re lying! I never did that!”

“Chloe, shut up!”

“I thought you had severe social anxiety and avoidance issues! Suddenly you’ve got a lot to say, huh? Suddenly you’ve found your voice!”

Lucas looked at me. Realization dawned on his face. When his eyes found mine, I looked away fast.

I shrugged and turned back to Hazel. “Fine. You didn’t do it. Whatever you say.”

“It doesn’t really matter. You’re going to prison regardless.”

“Or did you forget? You hired someone to burn down the house.”

“Setting fire to a house with people inside isn’t just a mistake. It’s attempted murder.”

But Hazel didn’t flinch. She actually smiled. “And what proof do you have?”

“You should know that a recording alone isn’t enough to put anyone away.”

“Besides, like I said, that recording is fake!”

I nodded. “You’re right. But I never said the recording was my only evidence.”

The color drained from Hazel’s face.

I gave a small nod, and three figures stepped forward from the crowd.

The man in the middle was being held up by the other two, his clothes disheveled, his face white with terror.

The moment Hazel saw him, her whole body began to shake.

The man saw her and immediately started screaming. “Hazel! Help me! This was all your idea! You can’t just throw me under the bus!”

Lucas stared. “Hazel?”

I kept my voice steady. “This is Silas. Hazel’s biological brother.”

“They found each other a long time ago. They’ve been working together from the very start.”

“Because…” I stopped. My mom was still standing there, shell-shocked. “You already know who their real mother is, don’t you?”
