After Losing My Legs I Learned My Fiancé Had a Fake Heart Chapter 06

Those three days crawled by, and Simon was miserable.

Chloe only cared about facials and shopping sprees. She couldn’t even handle the basics of his

wardrobe.

Today, he’d showed up to a leadership summit in a wrinkled dress shirt with a mustard yellow (ie.

The Chief of Medicine had pulled him aside, voice loaded with meaning. “Simon, we all know you young guys like to make a statement, but there’s a time and a place, don’t you think?

He went home and fought with Chloe. She pouted. “Babe, the hospital thing seems so boring

anyway. A small-time department head talked to you like that. The Rhodes family has so much money-why don’t you just quit and run the family business?”

She didn’t get it. Medicine was his dream. For years, he’d fought off his family’s pressure and

poured his soul into research, and Chloe boiled it down to “boring.”

In that moment, he missed Vera with an intensity that left him breathless. Only Vera understood

him. This late-arriving substitute couldn’t compare to her.

He dug out his spare phone. Vera hadn’t gotten a single reply from him in three days. She must be

losing her mind. Fine. He’d give her an opening this time.

But when he opened the chat, the screen wasn’t flooded with desperate messages like he’d

expected. He frowned, stepped onto the balcony, thinking it was a signal issue. One second. Two. Three. The screen stayed empty.

Their last conversation was from over a week ago. “I’m going dark to finish the experiment! Trust me, I’m going to beat Chloe!”

This wasn’t right. Unease trickled through him.

He rushed to the security office. “How many kids came by in the last three days? Pull up the footage.”

The guard looked baffled. “Kids? No kids have been here.”

Simon didn’t believe him. He sat down and combed through the footage himself today, yesterday, the day before. Nothing. Still nothing. How was that possible? The dread swelled into something

massive.

He called his estate manager. “What did you tell the guards? Why hasn’t a single one shown up?”

The manager smiled. “Sir, don’t worry. I told them if any kid shows up, they’re to let me know immediately. You and Miss Channing depend on those children to get messages through. I’d never

actually turn them away.”

Simon let out a short laugh. “You think of everything, don’t you.”

“Now, hand them over. I need to ask them face-to-face how Vera’s doing, or I won’t be able to get a

moment’s peace.”

The manager froze. “You saw the footage. No one has come.”

Real panic set in. He would go to the children’s home himself. He ran upstairs to grab his keys,

Passing Chloe’s room, he heard her low voice on the phone. “Please, Vera, come home. Simon needs you. I can give the role of Mrs. Rhodes back to you.”

“What else do you need? You don’t want to see me anymore? I… I can do that. I’ll go back to the countryside tomorrow and make sure I have enough meds. I’ll never come back.”

“Yes. From now on, you’ll be the only Channing heiress.”

Chloe’s voice shrank, bleeding into a tearful whisper. Simon saw red. He tore into the room and roared into the phone. “Vera! I knew it. You’re unbelievable. You stay at that children’s home and think long and hard about what you’ve done. Don’t you dare leave without my permission.”

He gathered a gasping Chloe into his arms and kissed the tears from her cheeks. He’d almost fallen for Vera’s act again.
