I don’t want to be Caleb Vance’s wife.

“Honey!”

“Sage!”

A crowd gathered in the courtyard. 

More and more people surrounded the spot, a human 

barrier between Caleb and me. He almost couldn’t see 

me–lying in a pool of blood, my eyes fixed on the floor 

above. 

Staring at him and every culprit in that room. 

“Honey!” 

Caleb stumbled as he ran downstairs, trying to push through the crowd. He heard people talking. 

“How tragic.” 

“I saw her the other day. She came in for an emergency with a knife stuck in her stomach.” 

“Look,” the voice continued, “her stomach is still 

bleeding. Falling from this height… she’s probably gone.” 

“She clearly didn’t want to live.” 

She didn’t want to live. 

The words were a knife twisting in Caleb’s heart, tearing at his flesh until he couldn’t move. He stood there, paralyzed, haunted by my words: 

“Caleb Vance.” 

“In the next life, let’s never meet again.” 

Doctors and nurses rushed in. Caleb was shoved aside by the crowd, stumbling to his knees. He watched me being lifted onto a stretcher, covered in blood. The blood trickling from my nose and mouth felt like a curse tightening around his throat, choking him. 

“Save her…” 

He suddenly sobbed. 

“Please.” 

Caleb finally broke down. 

“Save my wife!” 

“Please,” he followed the gurney, crying as they 

pushed me toward the ER, “I can’t lose my wife!” 

“I don’t want to lose her!” 

“Do whatever it takes! Save her!” 

His cries were drowned out by the crowd. He heard someone scoff: “I know him. I saw him flirting with another woman in the stairwell the other day.” 

“He said he deliberately let his wife find a used condom to ‘trigger‘ her, to keep her under his thumb. He didn’t expect her to jump!” 

“Ugh.” 

“What a scumbag!” 

Caleb’s chest tightened; he couldn’t breathe. He wanted 

to argue. 

But he found. 

He couldn’t find a single word to say. 

Until. 

He watched me disappear into the operating room. 

Before he could catch his breath, his collar was seized. 

“You animal!” 

My father punched Caleb across the face, roaring. 

“If anything happens to my daughter!” 

“I’ll have your life!” 

“I’ll kill you myself!” 

My father seemed to finally remember. 

He still had a daughter. 

He seemed to finally remember his vow to protect me 

forever. 

He remembered. 

The day of my wedding. 

He had held my hand, his eyes red. 

“Sage.” 

“Dad will always be your backup.” 

“Sweetheart.” 

“No matter what happens out there, no matter what 

you’re going through, tell me.” 

“I’ll handle it for you.” 

He seemed to recall the promise, and then he recalled 

my desperate, broken question: “My happiness is less 

important than your reputation, isn’t it?!” 

“My life is worth less than the Sterling face!” 

“Is it?!”
