My Commander Ex Divorced Me Then I Became Out of His League Chapter 14

In 2026, Gavin Whitmore requested a transfer from the front lines to a rear command post.

I heard he lived alone in the base compound. He got a dog. Every day, on his walks, he’d stop and stand for a while under the pomegranate tree near the family housing units.

The tree we planted the year we got married.

Nova eventually married a logistics officer. Her life was neither good nor bad. She never

approached me again.

As Martha aged, her health deteriorated. She was admitted to the hospital once. Crestwood General,

as it happened.

When the nurses came to request a consult, I went.

I pushed open the door to her room and saw the white-haired old woman in the bed.

She looked at me. Her lips trembled for a long moment. Then she said, “Sloane Ashford. You came.”

“Martha. I’m here to look at your scans.”

I picked up her CT films and held them against the light.

The whole time, I didn’t bring up a single thing from the past.

As I was leaving, her voice stopped me.

“Sloane.”

She called me Sloane. Not Sloane Ashford.

“What happened back then… I was wrong.”

I stood with my back to her, my hand on the door handle.

“I know.”

I said it, and I walked out.

The door clicked shut softly behind me.

The hallway was quiet.

I stood there for a few seconds, pulled in a deep breath, and headed toward the next room.

I still had many more patients to see.

That year I turned sixty-six. At the National Lifetime Achievement Award ceremony for cardiothoracic surgery, I stood on stage, looking out into the dark sea of faces.

The host read my bio.

“Professor Sloane Ashford. Pioneered the first hypothermic cardiopulmonary bypass with valve

repair in the U.S. Over eight thousand cardiac surgeries. Trained forty-two surgical fellows. Authored more than a hundred and thirty peer-reviewed papers…”

The applause rolled on and on. ”

Standing beneath the spotlight, I suddenly thought of a winter day, so many years ago.

December 16, 2019.

In a room at Campbell Military Medical Center, a young woman in a thin coat signed her name on a

divorce decree.

She had a few crumpled bills in her pocket. Barely enough for a bus ticket out of town.

She had nothing.

But she wasn’t afraid of anything.

Because she knew-

This life, she was living for herself.
