My Commander Ex Divorced Me Then I Became Out of His League Chapter 10

My Commander Ex Divorced Me Then I Became Out of His League Chapter 10

I was coming out of the inpatient building. He was leaning against one of the concrete pillars by the

entrance.

Same uniform. But thinner.

Two years on border duty had carved his features sharper. The hollows under his eyes were deeper.

When he saw me, he pushed forward two steps.

“Sloane.”

I stood on the steps, a surgical plan I’d just finished drafting in my hand.

“Commander Whitmore. What brings you here?”

The title hit him like a slap.

He was silent for a few seconds. Then, “I want to talk to you.”

“About what?”

“About… us.”

I glanced down at my watch.

“I have a consult in twenty minutes. Keep it brief.”

Gavin’s expression shifted.

He’d probably never been treated like this in his life.

A decorated military commander, and a woman was giving him a time limit just to speak.

But he swallowed it.

“Sloane. The divorce-”

“It was arranged by the higher-ups. You don’t need to explain.”

“I know. But I-”

“I signed it willingly. So you don’t need to feel guilty, either.”

I cut him off twice.

Each time, the furrow between his brows deepened. “Sloane. Will you let me finish a damn sentence?”

His voice rose slightly.

I lifted my head and looked at him.

Thirty-year-old Gavin Whitmore. Handsome. Commanding. Every inch of him radiating authority.

In my last life, just standing in front of him would make my palms sweat. I’d lower my eyes and turn into a meek little rabbit.

But that was my last life.

“Fine. Talk.”

He dragged in a breath.

“I looked into the divorce situation after the fact. It wasn’t entirely the higher-ups’ doing. Someone manipulated the process.”

My heartbeat kicked up half a step.

My face showed nothing.

“Who?”

“…Nova Pierce.”

When he said the name, his voice dropped low. There was a suppressed fury in it.

“She used her father’s connections to push the paperwork up the chain. Claimed our marriage was

a security risk. The higher-ups didn’t have the full picture, They signed off on it.”

I watched him.

“And?”

“And I’ve handled it. Nova has been reassigned away from my unit. She’s in Logistics now.”

He met my eyes. “Sloane. We can remarry.”

Five words. Tossed out like they weighed nothing.

So light I almost laughed.

In my last life, I’d waited thirty years for those five words.

Waited until my hair turned white. My teeth loosened. My back bent. My sight dimmed.

Waited until I collapsed on the kitchen floor.

Waited until I was dead and buried before I supposedly got an “I owe her” at my graveside.

And in this life, he delivered a casual “We can remarry” and thought that was enough.

Gavin Whitmore. You think that’s enough?

“No.”

The word landed.

Gavin Whitmore’s entire body went rigid.

“What?”

“I said, no. Thank you for telling me the truth. But-”

I looked straight into his eyes and said each word distinctly.

“I don’t want to remarry.”

His face drained of color in a single instant.
