He Proposed to Her on a Mountain, I Got a Cancer Diagnosis in a Hospital Chapter 08

His throat moved as he swallowed back the taste of 

blood. 

“Don’t want it anymore…” 

“Do you mean you don’t want the ring, or you don’t 

want me?” 

He grabbed my shoulders before he could stop himself. 

His fingers turned white, digging so hard they almost 

sank into my flesh. 

“Tell me. Say it. Say you just don’t like the ring. Tell me 

you still want me.” 

“Neither.” I lowered my head and looked at my ruined 

body. “Nathan, right now you really do look like a child. throwing a tantrum.” 

His voice broke with desperation. 

The roles had reversed. He had become the hysterical 

one I used to be. 

“No.” 

His whole body shook violently. 

Then he stumbled out of the room. 

I lay in bed and forced down a fistful of painkillers. 

Cold sweat drenched me. 

They did not help. 

Now even breathing hurt. 

Half–conscious, all I could see was the Nathan from 

our younger days. 

Back then, he would run all over the city to buy me the 

food I wanted. 

No matter how badly we fought, he always had my 

favorite coffee tucked away for me. 

He had promised he would never change. 

The corners of my eyes grew damp. Then I felt someone 

wiping away my tears. 

The next day, the ring was sitting on the nightstand. 

There was dirt clinging to it. 

Nathan did not try to force it on me again. 

He dressed me himself and took me to the hospital. 

From one end of the country to the other, we went from 

one hospital to the next. 

From here to overseas, he spent every cent he could. 

The results were all more or less the same. 

Standing in front of me, he finally broke down and 

cried. 

“Grace…” 

I tugged at the corner of my mouth, finding it all a little 

fake. 

“Nathan, don’t do this.” 

“It makes it look like you loved me so much.” 

The tears froze on his face. Then he forced out a bitter 

smile. 

“That makes sense. Right now, you probably hate me 

more than anything.” 

“That’s okay. I’ll still take care of you.” 

When he brought me home again, the house was filled 

with plants and flowers. 

They were all things I used to love, things he had once 

thought were meaningless. 

A faint fragrance filled the air. 

But all I could smell was the scent of goodbye. 

He excitedly introduced every flower to me one by one. 

Then suddenly, a disheveled figure burst through the 

door. 

Lila limped in, her clothes rumpled and worn. 

“Nathan, you had to be blind to choose her.” 

“The one standing beside you should’ve been me. 

We’re the ones who belong together.” 

“I’m your best partner. I’m the one who understands you best.” 

She screamed as she rushed forward. 

Nathan frowned and kicked her away. 

“You still haven’t given up?” 

“Have the last few days taught you nothing?” 

Crying, Lila dragged herself back to her feet. 

“Why are you treating me like this?” 

“Nathan, you destroyed everything I had because of 

her.” 

“Do you know what people are saying about me now? 

Even my parents refuse to acknowledge me…” 

Watching her scream and cry her heart out, Nathan 

strode over and grabbed her. 

“This is your comeuppance.” 

“Lila, get as far away from me as you can.” 

The room fell quiet again. 

He lightened his steps and gently smoothed my hair. 

“Don’t pay any attention to her.” 

“You’re the only one in my heart.” 

A deep longing filled his eyes. 

“Honey, could you be the way you used to be again?” 

“Could you comfort me? Could you tell me one more 

time that you love me?” 

“Don’t ignore me. I don’t want to be abandoned 

again.” 

“Tell me Nathan Sterling is still someone somebody wants, okay?” 

At the mention of the past, my fingers curled slightly. 

The bitterness inside me flooded through my whole body again. 

I tipped my head back and said softly, 

“No.” 

“Nathan, you deserve to have no one.” 

“A stray orphan like you should’ve died a long time ago.“
