I Ditched My Childhood Sweethearts for a Brighter Future Chapter 10

When I turned around, Logan was clearly stung by the look in my eyes.

“You really are mad. You never used to look at me like that.” He stuffed the camera back into his bag. “Paisley, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to ignore you lately. I was just…”

Charles, who had been silent for a long time, suddenly spoke up, “Paisley, we just got a little distracted by Alanna for a moment. The three of us are definitely the most important people to each other…”

Logan’s eyes lit up, seemingly in complete agreement with that statement. “Exactly. Anyone else doesn’t actually matter.”

Alanna’s dance had ended, and the principal was smiling as he introduced Waylon.

Standing under the spotlight, Waylon’s posture was perfect.

It was only then that I remembered why he had seemed so familiar the first time I met him.

The name Waylon had been mentioned by our homeroom teacher more than once, and his photo still hung on the school’s wall of fame.

He was the state scholarship winner who had graduated from our school two years ago.

Beside me, Logan picked up the conversation, his voice rough. “Charles is right. The three of us have been together since we were kids. You’ve only been stressing over tutoring lately because you’re afraid you won’t keep up and get into the University of Portland.”

“You don’t need to be so anxious. I’ll tutor you every day from now on, and Charles can organize your notes. Just like before, we’ll get into Portland together.”

Charles nodded in agreement. “Yeah. We were just saying a few days ago that if you didn’t get into Portland and had to be separated from us, you’d definitely cry. We were even willing to go to Corban University with you…”

My gaze locked with Waylon’s up on the stage. A subtle, tingling current swept through my chest, and a faint smile touched my lips. “I’m not going to the University of Portland anymore.”

The air suddenly went dead silent.

Logan grabbed my wrist, his voice rising uncontrollably. “Then where the hell are you going?”

Charles frowned deeply, staring up at the stage.

Waylon’s voice echoed through the speakers above. “I hope all of you perform your absolute best on the upcoming exams. I’ll be waiting for you at Harvard.”

I pressed my lips together. “I’m going to Harvard.”

His grip tightened painfully on my wrist, Logan’s handsome face twisting slightly. “You’re trying to go to Harvard for him?”

I forcefully yanked my hand back. “No. Not for anyone else. It’s just that I finally realize I deserve the best.”

Charles stared at me blankly, as if looking at a complete stranger.

I stood up and walked past both of them. “It just so happens that the best person is waiting for me at the best school.”

Waylon flipped through my exam papers as we walked. “Those two back there… your childhood friends?”

I nearly tripped over my own feet, replying awkwardly. “Just neighbors…”

Before the words fully left my mouth, I spotted Logan running out after us.

Hearing the word “neighbors,” the last bit of light in his eyes completely vanished.

He had used that exact phrase to explain me to Alanna before.

Now it had come back around like a boomerang, landing right in his own chest.
