He Sent Me a Blanket but Hugged His Intern in Bed Chapter 09

That humiliation didn’t drive Spencer away.

Instead, he doubled down, turning his self-punishment into a ritual.

He stopped staying at the hotel.

Every night, he sat on the bench below my apartment building. In the bitter Ashford winter, with temperatures dropping into the teens, he wore only a thin coat and sat motionless until dawn.

Every morning, I saw his blue-tinged lips and stiff joints when I left for work.

He never approached me-he only watched with eyes that looked shattered.

Meanwhile, back in Fairhaven, his company was unraveling. His prolonged absence had cost them several major contracts. The board was preparing to oust him.

He didn’t care.

He transferred all his shares to Leo’s trust fund, along with his properties and personal holdings.

Everything he owned was offered up for a single chance at redemption.

One weekend, I took Leo to play in the snow at Central Green.

Spencer followed at a distance, as usual.

Leo ran too fast, tripped, and burst into tears.

Spencer sprinted toward him-faster than I could react.

He scooped Leo up, brushing snow off his little coat, his movements clumsy and desperate.

“Leo, shh. I got you. I will make it better.”

His eyes were red-rimmed, and his voice cracked.

Leo stopped crying and looked at him curiously.

“Why do you always follow us?”

Spencer’s tears spilled over.

He held Leo tightly, his voice filled with pain.

“Because… I lost the most precious thing in the world. And he’s trying to find it.”

I stepped forward with a cold expression and took Leo out of his arms.

“Spencer, you’re scaring him.”

He let go reluctantly, sinking to his knees in the snow and looking up at me.

“Natalie, I’ve given you everything. The company. The money. My life. Anything you want, it’s yours. Let me stay-as a butler, a driver, a dog-anything. Just don’t send me away. Please.”

He was broken, stripped of every shred of pride.

Three years ago, that might have moved me.

Now, I only felt pity.

“Spencer, you still don’t understand.”

“I don’t need money. I don’t need a butler. I don’t need a dog. My life right now is a hundred times happier

than it ever was with you.”

“Your grand act of suffering moves no one but yourself. To me, it’s just harassment.”

I paused, my voice turning cold.

“If you really feel guilty, then do the only thing that matters: get out of our lives forever. That’s the only apology I’ll accept.”

Spencer knelt in the snow, his eyes hollow.

His lips moved, but no words came out.

I took Leo’s hand and walked away.

Without hesitation.

Without looking back.
