He Sent Me a Blanket but Hugged His Intern in Bed Chapter 08

Spencer didn’t leave.

He checked into a hotel across the street from my apartment.

Every morning, when I walked Leo to preschool, he stood on the corner-far enough away not to intrude, but close enough to be seen.

In his hand was a bottle of room-temperature water.

Always exactly 104 degrees.

A pathetic echo of the ritual he thought would win me back.

I didn’t spare him a second glance.

One afternoon, I received a call from an old colleague back in Fairhaven.

“Natalie, did you hear? Amber Hayes is in prison.”

My fingers paused on the keyboard.

“What happened?”

“She couldn’t maintain her lifestyle after leaving the company. She couldn’t find a decent job, so she got

involved with a wealthy married man.”

“His wife caught them and investigated her finances/uncovering evidence of embezzlement and extortion.

She’s serving time now.”

My colleague clicked her tongue.

“And get this: Spencer had her investigated after she left. Turns out her ‘fainting spell’ three years ago was

staged.”

“She bribed a doctor to help her play the victim. And that project error at the gala? She deliberately caused it so he would defend her publicly.”

I listened, completely unmoved.

“Is that so?” I said flatly. “Then Mr. Cole’s judgment wasn’t very good.”

I hung up, took a sip of my black coffee-bitter, but refreshing.

That evening, snow began falling again.

As I stepped out of my office building, Spencer hurried over, holding a black umbrella.

Half of his body was exposed, his shoulders covered with a layer of snow.

“Natalie, the snow is heavy. Let me walk you home.”

His voice was pleading.

I stopped and looked at him coldly.

“Spencer, do you really think that by playing the devoted ex-husband, I’ll forgive you?”

He flinched.

“No. I just want to take care of you.”

“I don’t need it.”

“Your idea of care was leaving me to face death alone when I needed you most.”

“Do you know Leo weighed barely three pounds when he was born? Do you know I spent three days in the ICU, in so much pain that I wished I had died?”

“Where were you then? You were holding Amber’s hand while she got a bandage for a cut that was already starting to heal.”

With every word, Spencer’s face grew paler.

His mouth opened and closed, but no sound came out.

“Natalie… stop…” He covered his face, his body shaking. “I know… I know I was wrong… Just kill me. Cut me open. If it’ll make you feel better…”

I watched him collapse and felt nothing but exhaustion.

“Killing you would only dirty my hands.”

I walked around him and got into a waiting cab.

As I closed the door, I turned and delivered the final blow.

“Spencer, you know Amber’s true colors now, right? A twenty-two-year-old intern played you like a fiddle, and you threw away your wife and child for her. You’re not just a cheater. You’re a fool.”

The door slammed shut.

Through the rear window, I saw him collapse onto his knees in the snow, screaming something I couldn’t

hear.

I leaned back in my seat and let out a long, slow breath.

For the first time in years, I felt light.
