He Married Her On The Day We Were Supposed To Wed Chapter 05

When I woke up, the pain in my chest was so intense that even the slightest movement felt as though it would tear me apart.

I forced myself to sit up, but Ryan, who had been keeping watch beside my bed, quickly reached out

to support me.

“Elise, tell me what you need, and I’ll do it for you. Your wound is still fresh. Moving around will only make it hurt more.

He carefully adjusted the hospital bed until I was comfortable, then called his office while getting

me settled.

“Elise is hurt. I don’t feel comfortable leaving her with a hired caregiver, so I need to stay here

myself.”

“Nathan, I won’t be coming into the office for the next few days. Please work with the other managers to keep things running.”

I did not care what Ryan was saying.

I only wanted to know what had happened to my mother.

Had they managed to save her?

Ignoring the agony in my chest, I struggled to sit up again just as my mother’s attending physician, Dr. Walker, entered the room with an angry expression.

“How many times did I tell you that your mother’s condition was critical? She could die at any time, and someone needed to stay with her around the clock.”

“How could all of you leave her alone? By the time we found her, she had no vital signs, and rigor

mortis had already set in.”

Ryan stared blankly at the doctor, unable to believe what he had heard.

Everything had happened so quickly. He had focused entirely on getting Elise treated and had completely forgotten about Mrs. Carter.

He had never imagined that Mrs. Carter would die so suddenly.

Ryan wrapped his arms tightly around my trembling body and patted my back again and again.

“Elise, don’t blame yourself. Your mother passed so suddenly. It wasn’t your fault.”

“If you need to cry, hold on to me and let it out.”

Even now, Ryan still believed my mother’s death had been an accident caused by no one noticing

her condition in time.

Rage surged through me. Gathering every ounce of strength I had, I slapped him across the face.

The wound in my chest tore open, and the pain made my vision go black. I nearly lost

consciousness.

I stared at Ryan and gave him a devastated, bitter smile.

“Ryan, do you know why I went after Lila with a knife?”

“She told my mother I was your mistress and deliberately provoked her until she suffered a sudden medical crisis. Then, when my mother desperately needed help, Lila stopped me from summoning help. Because of her, my mother missed her best chance of being saved and died right in front of

me!”

“She killed my mother. I wanted to kill her!”

“No. That’s impossible. Lila isn’t that kind of person!”

Ryan defended Lila without thinking.

But once he calmed down, a flicker of doubt crept in.

Lila might be kind, but given who she was, appearing in Mrs. Carter’s hospital room had clearly been inappropriate.

More importantly, Mrs. Carter treasured Elise above everything. When the knife plunged into Elise’s chest, Ryan had not heard a sound from her.

If Mrs. Carter had still been conscious, she never would have remained silent.

Unless she had already been gone by then.

If Mrs. Carter had died while Lila was in the room, then Lila really might have had something to do

with it.

Ryan frowned.

Elise’s condition had been so critical that he had overlooked many details.

Now that he thought back carefully, far too many things did not add up.

A knock sounded at the door. Ryan got up to answer it and found Lila standing there with a wounded, aggrieved expression.

Her eyes were red and shimmering with tears, making her look like an injured rabbit.

Ryan’s heart softened instantly, and his voice grew gentler without him even realizing it.

“Lila, what are you doing here?”

Lila threw herself into his arms.

“If I hadn’t come, who knows what Elise would have accused me of next?”

“Did she tell you I killed Mrs. Carter? I didn’t do it!”

“I heard Mrs. Carter was seriously ill, so I asked Megan to bring me here to visit her.”

“When we reached the door, I overheard Elise and Mrs. Carter talking. They were planning to fake Mrs. Carter’s death and frame me for it. That way, you would hate me and the two of them could keep controlling your money.”

“Ryan, you’ve treated them so well, yet they were plotting against you. I was furious on your behalf. I went into the room to confront Elise, but once I exposed their plan, she tried to kill me!”

“Ryan, I was terrified. I was so scared. I almost died. I almost never got to see you again!”

Lila sobbed against Ryan’s shoulder.

He hesitated for a moment before finally wrapping his arms around her and gently comforting her.

“It’s all right. I’m here.”

“I’ll find out what really happened, sweetheart.

Ryan looked back at me, his expression complicated.

One woman was the girlfriend he had loved for twelve years. The other was the mistress he had pampered for eight.

He truly did not know which one to believe.

Megan, who had followed Lila inside, suddenly spoke

“Ryan, I can confirm Lila’s story.”

“I heard Elise and her mother planning to fake Mrs. Carter’s death and frame Lila. Elise also bribed the doctor who just came in here and announced that Mrs. Carter was dead.”

“Mrs. Carter isn’t dead at all. Elise moved her somewhere else and hid her.”

“If you don’t believe me, ask the hospital to produce Mrs. Carter’s body. They won’t be able to!”

Ryan considered her words before looking back at me.

“Megan is right. Once we confirm whether your mother is alive or dead, we’ll know who’s lying.”

He immediately called the hospital administrator and demanded to know where was being held.

my

mother’s body

The hospital administrator replied,

“I’ve checked the morgue log several times. There’s no record of Linda Carter’s body ever being brought in. Are you sure there hasn’t been some mistake?”
