The moment I heard that, I instinctively thought of Julian.

He was with them too.

Fear rose in me.

What if something had happened?

In an instant, my palms were slick with sweat.

I remembered Julian’s phone number.

I called him right away.

But he had blocked me.

I thought, this man really did things thoroughly. He deleted me on WhatsApp and made sure to block my number too.

If he could, would he wish I had never existed in this world at all?

With no other choice, I went downstairs to the public phone.

The apartment was on the sixth floor.

I ran all the way down, and by the time I got there, I was gasping.

I let out a breath and told him that the student advisor couldn’t reach Chloe.

The next second, I heard Julian’s voice through the receiver.

“They’re eating downstairs. They didn’t bring their phones. I’ll tell her later.”

I said okay.

I was about to hang up when I heard the flick of a lighter.

Then his careless voice came through.

“Why didn’t you come?”

I froze.

Only then did I remember that Julian had once asked how I got along with my roommates.

I hadn’t wanted him to think I was unpopular, so I had said we were fine.

Then he had asked:

[The girl who was with you that day, I only added her because I wanted to add you. But she keeps messaging me. It’s a little annoying. Can I delete her?]

Back then, I hadn’t known he thought that account was mine.

And I wasn’t good at speaking badly about people behind their backs.

She asked carefully, “I’m not used to sleeping alone. Can I sleep in your suite? I can take the couch.”
