When I returned to the apartment, Chloe was standing by the window.

The moment she saw me, she said lazily, “I thought Noah was chasing you. Turns out he was just delivering something. You barely even talked. But what did he give you? I was too far away to see.”

I stayed silent for a moment.

I could hardly tell her it was Julian’s breakup money and hush money.

“Nothing.”

Then, before she could ask again, I grabbed my sleepwear and went straight to the bathroom.

After my shower, I heard Chloe on the phone with Julian.

She had a face mask on.

Her phone was on speaker.

She told him she wanted to go to the next city over that weekend.

Julian agreed immediately.

“I’ll have someone book the hotel.”

Chloe smiled.

“Can I bring two roommates with me?”

On the other end, I didn’t know what Julian was doing, but something shattered through the receiver.

Chloe jumped.

“What happened?”

Julian’s voice was a little low.

“A glass slipped. It’s fine.”

For the next few days, they called every night.

Sometimes their topics turned intimate.

She pressed him, “Who got your first kiss?”

The man laughed softly.

“Still mine for now. Saving it for you.”

Every time that happened, I had to pretend I hadn’t heard anything and quietly go about my own business.

I stopped talking much.

Whenever I received a new contact request, I introduced myself clearly first, terrified someone had added the wrong person again.

That weekend, they left with their suitcases.

I finally breathed easier.

But the second day after they left, my student advisor called.

She said she needed to reach Chloe.

But she couldn’t get through.

The other two roommates weren’t answering either.

“It’s urgent. Can you reach her?”
